Monday Night Raw Review - May 6, 2013

An infuriated Triple H seeks retribution on Paul Heyman.
Lackluster opening segment featuring WWE Champion John Cena, Ryback and Vickie Guerrero. Cena can be humorous at times, but his comedy here was nowhere near funny and only belittled his upcoming opponent. Ryback's mic work was solid, but his constant pacing back and forth served as a distraction. If nothing else, it was nice to see the Last Man Standing stipulation made official for the WWE Championship match at Extreme Rules.

Typical match with Randy Orton defeating Damien Sandow. Sandow's pre-match promo was hysterical and easily one of the highlights of the night. The in-ring action was fine for what it was, but we've seen it countless times before, not to mention a mere three days prior on SmackDown. Orton gained nothing from this victory, so I'm not exactly sure what purpose it served. Couldn't Big Show have interfered during the match and allowed Sandow to pick up the win?

Meaningless match with R-Truth defeating Fandango by count-out. The pre-match stuff with Fandango and Chris Jericho was harmless, but it paled in comparison to the rest of the rivalry between the two. The match was over before it even started, so what was the point in even having it all? Furthermore, why was Truth was the one to hand Fandango his first singles loss in such fluky fashion?

Great match between World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler and Alberto Del Rio. The chemistry these two have in the squared circle is simply amazing, so I never expected anything less of excellence in this bout. It was given a substantial amount of time and the disqualification loss protected Ziggler. Jack Swagger came off as an absolute beast following the contest when he demolished almost everyone at ringside, which did a great deal in making him look like a threat to the World title going into Extreme Rules.

Good six-man tag team match with The Shield defeating United States Champion Kofi Kingston and The Usos. While it seemed like a glorified squash match from the start, the fact the faces got a significant amount of offense in against The Shield was a pleasant surprise. It was a competitive contest featuring some fun in-ring action. Dean Ambrose pinning Kingston to score the victory leads me to believe we might be seeing him challenge for the U.S. title in the very near future, which would be an excellent idea.

Top 10 Matches of the Week: April 28th - May 4th

Holy shit. That's the only way I can describe this week's wrestling. Every promotion delivered some amazing matches, some of which are instant classics. Whether you were watching WWE, TNA, or ROH (especially ROH) this week, you were treated to some extremely awesome matches that essentially reminded us why we watch wrestling. Usually I get quite bored sifting through 15 hours of wrestling each week, but this week kept me extremely entertained and captivated. Now first off, I would like to say that #10 on this list would be #1 on any other week, meaning that there are some VERY good matches that were left off of the list due to the excessive amounts of insane wrestling that happened this week. So don't go telling me about matches I missed, because I didn't miss them. Trust me. Speaking of which, I would just like to give an honorable mention to the #11 match, Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton. That match reminded us how great Orton can be when he tries, and how Rhodes has the potential to be a future World Champion. Well, when he drops the moustache at least. Anyways, enough of me babbling in the introductory paragraph, let's get into me babbling on in the actual list!

#10. Chavo Guerrero & Rob Van Dam vs. Samoa Joe & Christopher Daniels (TNA Joker's Wild)

TNA aired their second ever "One Night Only" PPV, where you can spend $15 to watch a 3-hour pre-taped themed wrestling show. While the theme on random tag teams wasn't as exciting as last month's X-Division theme, the show managed to give us a few entertaining matches. Although the surprisingly good opener of James Storm and Christian York vs. Crimson and Gunner set the bar very high for the show, the Cruiserweight/X-Division group of Chavo, RVD, Joe, and Daniels stole the whole show. Whether it was watching Christopher Daniels' unenthusiastic partner Samoa Joe shake his head and the Fallen Angel's antics, or watching all four men decimate each other with high impact moves, every detail of this match delivered. Samoa Joe would end up picking up the victory for his team after hitting a Muscle Buster on RVD, but I think we all wish the match could've gone on a little bit longer.

The Shield attack WWE Tag Team Champion Kane.
Great match between Ryback and Daniel Bryan. To my knowledge, this is the first time we've seen these two clash since Ryback's return to the ring last year, so this bout felt fresh. Ryback looked dominant throughout and Bryan sold extraordinarily well for his offense. It was given a substantial amount of time and the right guy went over. Furthermore, I always like when the show kicks off with in-ring action rather than the standard promo that we've accustomed to seeing each week.

Fine squash match with Fandango defeating Zack Ryder. It was mind boggling to me that Ryder received mic time and an actual entrance on this week's Raw rather than SmackDown, but that was simply nitpicking things. The match was only within mere minutes, but it served its purpose in furthering Fandango's momentum. However, I still continue to question what rivalry Fandango will engage in next, as he can't face enhancement talent forever.

Fun Triple Threat tag team match with Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez defeating World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston as well as Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter. The previous two matches were harmless, but they were long enough to amount to anything. Granted, the third and final tag match wasn't given much time either, but everyone was able to get involved at that point. I'm not fond of Ziggler tapping out to Del Rio, but I was fine with it given Ziggler's various victories in recent weeks.

Part 4: United States Championship and Various Feuds

Daniel Bryan continued to feud with The Miz after coming back to WWE. At Night of Champions, Bryan defeated The Miz to win his first United States Championship. At Hell in a Cell, Bryan successfully defended it against Morrison and The Miz in a triple threat submissions count anywhere match. At Bragging Rights, he beat the Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler in a champion vs. champion match, and then he beat Ted DiBiase at Survivor Series.

In the latter part of 2010, Daniel developed a relationship with The Bella Twins, and he became the mentor for Derrick Bateman in season four of NXT. In an odd turn of events in January 2011, it was revealed that Daniel had a secret relationship with Gail Kim. On the March 14 edition of Raw, Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan for the US title. I actually attended that Raw. The rematch was supposed to take place at WrestleMania 27, but it ended up being a lumberjack match that turned into a battle royal. Not to mention, this all took place before ‘Mania went on air.

-The show kicks off with a preview of Chris Jericho’s “debut” tonight on NXT!

Triple Threat Elimination Match: Primo and Epico vs. The Wyatt Family vs. Neville and Bo Dallas

I was pleased with the stipulation and the participants. It was very nice to see something that hasn’t been done or seen for awhile. This was a mediocre-paced match. The action was slow at times, but of course Neville helped pick it up. It looked as if Neville and Dallas would win after they eliminated Primo and Epico. Nevertheless, Rowan came out of nowhere with a clothesline for the victory!

Winners: The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erik Rowan) by pinfall

-We get a video package showing what started the on-going feud between Paige and Summer Rae.
