By Graham "GSM" Matthews TNA World Heavyweight Champion Ethan Carter III Interrupted The Hardyz Jeff Hardy is better on the mic when he's limited, so I'm glad that was the case here. Besides, Matt is easily the stronger talker of the two and it was smart to have him carry most of this segment before EC3 came out. EC3 continues to play the pest heel role to perfection and he's only improved as his title reign has progressed. I don't know how to feel about the slave storyline, but I'll discuss that more in detail later in the review. Talking segments aren't the best way of kicking off any wrestling show, but at least the response from The Hardyz gave viewers as a hook for the remainder of the night Eric Young def. Chris Melendez for Melendez' Leg Yes, you read that correctly, but you might not be questioning it given this is TNA after all. They've had two or three matches so far, and I believe Young has won every one. I'm a sucker for a good story as much as the next guy and perhaps they're building to Melendez's big win, but he's not over enough at this point to be taking all these losses. The match was mediocre and it never felt like anything was on the line. The most hilarious part of this entire segment was Melendez taking off his leg and handing it to Young while just standing there like a goof.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews The Briscoes def. The Bloodhound Warriors I had never seen or heard of The Bloodhound Warriors before this bout, and this wasn't a strong introduction for the duo on ROH TV. It's not that this was a bad match, but they weren't nearly as dominant as they appeared to be. They scored some offense, but mostly it was all The Briscoes as it should have been. They're the ones involved in a notable program right now, so they needed the win more. Are The Bloodhound Warriors essentially ROH's version of The Ascension? Let's hope not. As for the post-match promo, it was a nice way of furthering the feud between Jay Briscoe and Adam Page and building to a match between the two next week. Roderick Strong def. Donovan Dijak Dijak continues to impress me with each of his outings in ROH. It's been well-established that Strong is great, but Dijak was a question mark when I started watching ROH again a few months ago and he's been one to watch lately. He had a very good outing against Strong and it wasn't pointless either considering Strong's issues with The House of Truth and Jay Lethal. War Machine making the save for Strong afterward effectively hyped the two upcoming title matches Lethal will be involved in with Strong and a member of War Machine. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady and The Hype Bros. def. Jason Jordan, Chad Gable and The Mechanics I can't stress enough how over Amore and Cassady were in the arena. They were probably the most popular stars on the entire show, and that's including TakeOver. The reaction they received made me question why they weren't in the NXT Tag Team Championship match instead of The Vaudevillians, but I digress. They worked well with The Hype Bros. and had a fun little eight-man tag team match. Jordan and Gable stood out to me during this bout and I look forward to seeing them enter the title picture sooner rather than later. The babyfaces scored the big hometown win and it made for a nice opening to the show. Eva Marie def. Carmella As someone who was in the Barclays Center for this show, I can tell you that the reaction for Eva Marie was toned down dramatically. She was practically booed out of the building, but the reaction she received came across on television as tame in comparison. The match wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been, but that's not to say it was any good. Eva is improving, I'll give her that, but she's still a work in progress and the worst of the bunch right now. I understand why she would want to do The Kendrick as an ode to her mentor, but she doesn't execute it very well, so she should go for something simpler as her finisher for now. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Prime Time Players def. Los Matadores It's encouraging to see that the Players are continuing to get on-air time despite losing the WWE Tag Team Championship at SummerSlam. The New Day are obviously the hotter act right now, but the Players are still a talented team in their own right and deserve to be showcased. They put together a fun little match with the Matadores who, as I've said countless times before, are excellent athletes despite their atrocious gimmick. The Players were the right duo to pick up the win and hopefully they won't be completely overshadowed now that The Dudley Boyz are back in WWE. Jack Swagger def. Adam Rose This new "party pooper" character for Rose is lifeless and beyond dull, but it's better than nothing, I guess. People stopped caring about him a long time ago, so the win won't do anything to benefit Swagger. We've seen the match between them enough times that it wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but thankfully it was kept relatively brief and it didn't overstay its welcome. |
