Ring of Honor Review - October 31, 2018

Adam PAge def. Scorpio Sky

This felt like a rather random match on paper, but I can't complain about getting some excellent action between two of the best athletes on the Ring of Honor roster. Sky doesn't get showcased enough in one-on-one competition, so this was a strong showing from him. Meanwhile, Page never ceases to deliver and thus this was a really fun opening matchup. If the rest of Bullet Club doesn't stick around in ROH, I can certainly see Page breaking out on his own eventually and winning singles gold.

Shane Taylor def. Eli Isom

Isom pinned Taylor during a four-way a few weeks ago, so the purpose of this match was basically to allow Taylor to get his win back. Isom scored a decent amount of offense, but Taylor was mostly dominant and picked up the win as he should have. Cheeseburger attempted to make the save afterward to no avail, which led to Flip Gordon laying out Taylor and calling out Bully Ray. Gordon and Bully then had a solid verbal exchange, setting up a match for next week where they'll have wrestlers representing them facing each other. Bully revealed Silas Young is his pick, and I'd assume Cheeseburger (just based off what we saw here) would be Gordon's.

Moustache Mountain def. Saxon Huxley and Sam Gradwell

Tyler Bate and Trent Bate have been dominating the singles ranks in recent weeks and this was their first outing in tag team action on the NXT UK brand. Although the tag team titles have yet to be officially announced, these two have to be in the running to be crowned the inaugural champs. They had an enjoyable opening match with Huxley and Gradwell here and had the crowd with them every step of the way.

Isla Dawn def. Nina Samuels

Of all the women who have been introduced in the NXT UK women's division thus far, I can't say Dawn leads the list of those who have impressed me the most. She has a unique look and style, I suppose, but nothing about this match screamed special to me. Rather, it was a fairly formulaic matchup with Dawn picking up the win. It was by no means bad, but Dawn could have done more to shine in her debut.

Braun Strowman and Ember Moon def. Jinder Mahal and Alicia Fox

This was a total mismatch on paper, since Strowman and Moon have been dominant throughout Season 2 while Mahal and Fox are a throwaway tandem. Despite that, this was a decent little match. Of course, I don't care for the Mahal and Fox pairing whatsoever, but Strowman and Moon are a blast together and made this bearable. I have no doubt they'll end up advancing to the finals to face whoever advances from the SmackDown Live side (probably The Miz and Asuka).

WWE Champion AJ Styles and Charlotte Flair def. Rusev and Lana

Damn, Rusev and Lana may be married, but they can't win a match to save their lives. Styles and Charlotte, on the other hand, continue to gel well as partners and are outlasting the competition. This was another entertaining outing on the whole with some fun antics here and there. I also liked how Styles sold the beatdown he received earlier in the evening on SmackDown, and how Charlotte remains distraught over her loss to Becky Lynch at Evolution. I'm excited for their eventual clash with Miz and Asuka, which I assume will be saved for one of the last weeks.

WWE Champion AJ Styles def. Daniel Bryan

On the surface, it was a dumb decision to rush into this WWE Championship match and not save it for Crown Jewel, but reportedly Bryan didn't want to be a part of the pay-per-view, and similar to John Cena, this was WWE's way of writing him off the show. I don't know why WWE couldn't have hyped it up for the main event slot, but whatever. At any rate, this was as excellent of a matchup as you'd expect from these two. What's scary is that I'm sure they could do even better with more time, so hopefully they get that chance in the future. It also looks like Samoa Joe isn't done in the title picture yet and I'm so stoked about that. A Styles vs. Bryan vs. Joe Triple Threat? Yes please.

Big E def. SmackDown Tag Team Champion Cesaro in a Trick or Street Fight

The New Day dressing up and coming out as The Brood (epic entrance theme and all) was something I didn't know I wanted until now. That was pretty damn cool. The match itself (if you can really call it that) consisted of your typical Halloween shenanigans, but I enjoyed it for what it was (hey, I'm a Halloween mark, so don't "@" me). New Day spitting "blood" in the face of Big Show was a nice treat and the whole thing was just fun. It also give New Day some much-needed momentum before their rematch for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at Crown Jewel.

Titus O'Neil def. Mojo Rawley

Man, Rawley was on quite the roll upon coming to Raw in the Super Shake-up earlier this win, whereas now he can't win a match to save his life. Not only is he losing more matches, he came up short against Titus O'Neil, who has been on the WWE roster since 2010 and hasn't shown any signs of improvement in years. Honestly, I couldn't care less, if only because he is a painfully bland performer. This was a perfectly fine matchup, though it offered nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever.

The B-Team def. Heath Slater and Rhyno

Remember when The B-Team were the Raw Tag Team Champions for a few months and were beating teams with actual potential such as The Revival? Yeah, me either. Both of these tandems are babyfaces (I think), so it was all fun and games for the most part (including cringe-worthy dances) and the crowd was into it. Beyond that stuff, the match was barely above average, but the final stretch or so was solid with The B-Team picking up the win in fluky fashion per usual.
