NXT Champion Oba Femi, Ricky Saints and Je'Von Evans Interrupted Each OtherEvans made a comment backstage at Deadline that if he won the men's Iron Survivor Challenge (which he did), he intended to cash in his title shot before New Year's Evil. I wasn't sure what he meant by that exactly, but we found out here that he wanted to get his shot on this show, which was later confirmed. He, Femi and Starks had a quality promo exchange to start the show, though Starks' mannerisms made it clear he'd be turning at the end of the night.

Gunther Addressed John CenaIt's a bummer that Cena isn't making any more televised appearances before Saturday Night's Main Event because a verbal exchange between him and Gunther would've been great. Instead, we only got to hear from Gunther, but to his credit, he cut a quality promo despite it being on the shorter side and he successfully sent the message that he intends to tap out Cena in his final match.
Orange Cassidy def. Roderick Strong in a Continental Classic Blue League MatchWe've seen at least two other matches from these guys dating back to last year and they've obviously proven they work well together. What made this encounter slightly more interesting was that they're both in The Conglomeration now, even though they didn't tease tension or anything. It was the quality contest you'd expect. It's apparent that Strong's just in this thing to have great matches and eat losses.
Oba Femi def. Ricky Saints to Win the NXT ChampionshipI actually enjoyed this more than their original encounter at No Mercy, which may not be too surprising given this had higher stakes with the winner advancing to Saturday Night's Main Event to face Cody Rhodes in a non-title match. I thought Starks was retaining for that exact reason, so Femi getting the belt back was a genuine shocker. This was a strong start to the show. If I was booking, I'd have Femi beat Rhodes clean, but I'm well aware that's not going to happen.
Pre-Show: Cedric Alexander def. Eric YoungThere was no story for this match, it was simply added to the pre-show to get both guys on the card. Young has been talking about a "cleanse" for a while now but has eaten nothing but losses since beating Joe Hendry before Bound for Glory. This was a well-worked match from these guys yet nothing out of the ordinary. Alexander's contract was believed to be around Bound for Glory, but it's safe to assume he re-signed.
