Gunther Attacked Nick Aldis During Their SummerSlam Contract SigningWhat a fantastic segment. Gunther, Aldis and even Adam Pearce played their roles to perfection and left me looking forward to the SummerSlam match. Gunther and Aldis both cut great promos, and I was especially happy Aldis got to shine on the mic because this is the first time we've seen that side of him in WWE. For what it's worth, Aldis had to relinquish his general manager duties in order to get Gunther at SummerSlam, but then Wade Barrett said on commentary it'd only be temporary, so we'll have to see. Brie Bella def. WWE Women's Tag Team Champion Lainey ReidBella and Reid had a match a few weeks ago on SmackDown that wasn't anything memorable, so I was surprised to see them run it back here. I would've preferred Reid beat Bella again, but oh well. I can't say much about the match because it mostly consisted of the commercial break. Post-match, Nikki Bella returned to save Brie and Paige from Fatal Influence and challenge the trio to a six-woman tag team matchup at SummerSlam. That's a fine use of all six stars, but I'm still hoping Paige breaks away from The Bella Twins sometime soon. Chelsea Green def. Kiana James to Qualify for the interim WWE Women's Championship 5-Way Ladder Match at SummerSlamI don't know that we've seen James in action on SmackDown since she lost to Giulia a while ago. It's not like Giulia has amounted to much on her own, either. Anyway, I'm glad Green advanced to SummerSlam seeing as how she's the more over of the two and can further her storyline with Tiffany Stratton with both of them being involved, but this wasn't very good for as long as it lasted. Cody Rhodes and Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk Faced OffPeople were disappointed by the first face-off these two had when they made their SummerSlam match official two weeks ago, but I knew the best was yet to come and that they had to establish tension between them first. Sure enough, they got into it backstage at Saturday Night's Main Event as well as the SummerSlam Kickoff event at Fanatics Fest the next day. They told a strong story with their promos here and it made for a terrific confrontation. This was what I was waiting for from them and it delivered. Hopefully they can continue to produce promos of this caliber in the remainder of their rivalry. Charlotte Flair def. Nia Jax by Disqualification to Qualify for the interim WWE Women's Championship 5-Way Ladder Match at SummerSlamThe booking of this bout was just as lazy as the booking of Jax vs. Jade Cargill last week. In fact, it was arguably even worse because they did the exact same finish except with Cargill getting involved, therefore awarding Flair the win by disqualification. I didn't have high hopes for this to begin with, but it still sucked. It would have been way easier to do Flair vs. Cargill one-on-one at SummerSlam instead of this five-way Ladder match nonsense. Finn Balor def. WWE Tag Team Champion Damian Priest, Royce Keys and United States Champion Trick Williams to Advance to the Undisputed WWE Championship No. 1 Contender's Match at SummerSlam (Non-Title)This four-way was randomly announced backstage earlier in the evening. By virtue of his victory, Balor will face Sami Zayn in a number one contender's match at SummerSlam. Is it worthy of making the pay-per-view? Seeing as how they don't have an issue with each other at the moment, not really, but at least Zayn will be on the card, and it should be fun. At any rate, this was a well-worked main event from what we saw of it. The two commercial breaks were ridiculous, and I could have done without the interference from The Bloodline, but this had nice energy on the whole. Overall ShowThe road to SummerSlam has been so strange because WWE has nailed the booking for the top matches on the card, whereas the midcard matches feel super rushed. That was the case with this show as well in that the two talking segments were excellent, but while I appreciated that we got three women's matches, none of them stood out at all. Additionally, the main event was enjoyable but didn't get enough time. WWE shouldn't be scrambling at this point to finalize the SummerSlam card when it's coming up next weekend.
