Friday Night SmackDown Review - July 4, 2025

Randy Orton Attacked Drew McIntyre After Confronting Cody Rhodes

I liked how Orton acknowledged that he was holding back against Rhodes at Night of Champions and appeared to be bothered by that, especially when McIntyre brought it up. Speaking of which, I'm happy to have McIntyre already back on television as I expected him to be out for longer following his loss to Damian Priest at the last Saturday Night's Main Event in May. This was a solid segment to set up Orton vs. McIntyre for Saturday Night's Main Event next Saturday.

Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair def. The Secret Hervice and Michin & B-Fab in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match to Qualify for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match at Evolution

Bliss and Flair were the most logical "team" from SmackDown to qualify for the tag title match at Evolution. I have no clue where this story with them is headed, but it has my attention for now. At the very least, it's more interesting than anything Flair has been involved in as of late. The match itself was a bit of a mess and not always pretty. WWE's women's tag division is nearly nonexistent, but if Bliss and Flair capture the belts, that'll give them something to do for a little bit.

The Wyatt Sicks (Erick Rowan, Joe Gacy, Dexter Lumis and Uncle Howdy) def. Chris Sabin, Johnny Gargano, Berto and WWE Tag Team Champion Montez Ford

Nick Aldis determined that Wyatt Sicks would earn another opportunity at the WWE Tag Team Championship if they could beat one member from four different tag teams in an eight-man tag team match. Yes, the booking was slightly convoluted, but I appreciated that it was something different and multiple teams were represented. I thought this was a good match and much better than Wyatt Sicks' outing against The Motor City Machine Guns a few weeks ago. Wyatt Sicks will have their rematch with The Street Profits for the tag titles on next week's episode.

WWE Women's Champion Tiffany Stratton Was Confronted by Jade Cargill and Named Trish Stratus as Her Opponent for Evolution

IYO SKY revealed on Raw this week that she had the chance to choose her challenger for Evolution and she went with Rhea Ripley. That was lazy enough, but WWE doing the exact same thing with Stratton was even worse. This is the sort of thing that happens when you have such a short window of time to build a pay-per-view. On paper, Stratton vs. Stratus is a big bout and it's not completely random considering they teamed up at Elimination Chamber earlier this year. Cargill's presence in this segment was fine as she'll likely be facing Stratton at SummerSlam.

Andrade and Rey Fenix def. Fraxiom

It's crazy how much Fraxiom have cooled off since their shot at the WWE Tag Team Championship was interrupted by Wyatt Sicks back in late May. They were on a roll prior to that point but have been treading water for the last month with the SmackDown tag team division back to being a jumbled mess. This actually marked their first true loss on the main roster, but it came after a competitive, fun match with Andrade and Fenix, who have quickly developed great chemistry as partners.

Jacob Fatu and Jimmy Uso def. United States Champion Solo Siko and JC Mateo

This was standard fare as far as tag team main events go. The four guys worked well together and the match made sense from a storyline standpoint, but it was hardly exciting, either. I can't say I'm a fan of Sikoa getting pinned less than a week removed from winning the United States Championship. The dude barely wins to begin with, so eating the loss here did him no favors. Sikoa and his crew immediately got their heat back by laying out Uso and Fatu afterward.

Overall Show

It's celebration time! No, I'm not talking about today's holiday but rather that SmackDown has returned to two hours. Rejoice! It didn't make the show significantly stronger this week, but this was also a taped show with a tired crowd (who also sat through Monday's Raw), so it was understandable. It ended up being a perfectly passable show with two notable returns. Hey, there were no hot dog eating contests like there were on Raw when it fell on the Fourth of July three years ago, so that was a plus. Happy Independence Day to all who observe, and a happy Friday for everyone else. Enjoy the weekend.
