NWA Powerrr Review - April 22, 2025

NWA Television Champion Carson Bartholomew Drake def. Tyler Franks

The commentators noted that this was the sixth title defense for Drake. One more successful defense and he'll be able to trade in the title for a shot at the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship (which is how Tyrus won it a few years ago). I appreciated that this didn't end in a time-limit draw as so many other TV title defenses have. This was a nice opener and I'd be all for Drake challenging for the top title if that's where this is headed.

Pretty Empowered def. The Money Birds

As a reminder, Kenzie Paige is still the NWA World Women's Champion as well as one-half of the NWA World Women's Tag Team Champions, but Big Mama holds the other half of the tag titles, not Kenzie's sister Kylie. I thought Money Birds might win by pinning Kylie and earn themselves a shot at the tag titles, but apparently not. This was a well-worked match and I was impressed by what Money Birds could do.

Frank def. Kerry Morton in a Dane Memorial Heavyweight Tournament Semifinal Match

Even with Austin Idol as his manager, I still can't get into this Frank dude (and yes, I'm well aware he's the former Judais). He's extremely boring and there's nothing out of the ordinary about him. Although this was a perfectly passable main event, the heel vs. heel dynamic was hard to get into and I wasn't a fan of the outcome as this means Frank will be in the finals of this tournament to crown a new world champ. I'm rooting for whoever he faces (unless it's Zyon, in which case it would be a lose vs. lose situation).

Overall Show

There were a handful of campy vignettes that aired throughout the episode with several wrestlers announcing their intention to become the new president of NWA's territories. I don't know if that will affect Powerrr at all, but I suppose we'll see. The rest of the show was just fine. The main event was meaningful, yet it was the weakest match of the three. I like what they're doing with Drake and hope he continues to be featured as much as he has been.
