Ring of Honor: Boxing Day Brawl Review - December 26, 2024

Blake Christian def. AR Fox

Christian walked into Hammerstein Ballroom as a heel at Final Battle because of his history in GCW, so I'm glad Ring of Honor is finally allowing him to embrace the boos because he's so infinitely more interesting as a heel. Fox was an excellent foil for him and they had a great match in the time they were allotted. I'd love to see more matches between these two now that Christian has established himself as a heel.

Lee Johnson def. Serpentico

Johnson and EJ Nduka seemed to turn heel by attacking The Gates of Agony following their loss to them on the Final Battle Zero Hour pre-show. I assume their heel turn is indeed official considering Johnson faced Serpentico (a babyface) here. This was a simple showcase for Johnson and pretty much what it needed to be. I figured we would see Gates of Agony appear afterward, but apparently not.

Katsuyori Shibata and "Dynamite Kid" Tommy Billington def. Premier Athletes (Ariya Daivari and Tony Nese)

Shibata just beat Billington in a random match at Final Battle, so it was logical for them to team up now that they've earned each other's respect. I don't know if they'll be a permanent pairing going forward, but they worked well as partners here. The match was decent, but I would've liked to see Shibata and Billington beat the Premier Athletes goofs a little quicker than they did.

Toni Storm def. Rebecca Scott

Storm would've been a perfect fit for ROH brand back when it was a bigger deal years ago. I don't know why she competed on ROH TV this week because I doubt she'll be a fixture on the show going forward, but she was a nice addition to this episode, if nothing else. This was a straightforward squash for Storm as it should have been. She continues to rack up wins while portraying her previous persona.

The Rottweilers def. Aaron Solo and QT Marshall

I legitimately had no idea that Rocky Romero and Homicide used to be tag team partners, but the fact they reunited in the Hammerstein Ballroom was pretty cool assuming they have history in the building. Marshall and Solo played their roles well and it was a fun match while it lasted. It's always a treat whenever Homicide pops up for the occasional appearance, regardless of the promotion.

MxM Collection def. Dustin Waller and Kylon King

AEW went all in on MxM Collection for a brief period, but they've cooled off considerably since their mini feud with The Acclaimed ended two months ago. That said, I'm not complaining because the gimmick can only go so far and they're probably better off at the ROH level, anyway. They'll never be legitimate threats to any set of tag titles, but this gave them their first win in at least a month or two.

ROH Women's World Champion Athena Expelled Lexy Nair From M.I.T.

Man, what are we even doing with this storyline at this point? Athena beating Starkz to retain her title at Final Battle two years in a row was bad enough, but what's worse is that they're continuing it. Personally, I'm not really invested anymore and just want it to end. I've always thought the M.I.T. stuff was stupid anyway and Athena "expelling" Nair instead of Starkz drags this out even longer. This segment was a waste of time.

ROH World Television Champion Komander def. Johnny TV

After doing lots of losing in both AEW and ROH over the last year and a half, Komander was rewarded with the ROH Television title at Final Battle. Hopefully he can be a fighting champion and do more with the belt than other champions we've had in the past year. Johnny TV doesn't have much credibility these days, but his in-ring ability is well documented and thus this was an enjoyable first title defense. I appreciated that this got the main event treatment.

Overall Show

I wasn't fond of the near-two-hour runtime, but on the whole, this easily an above-average edition of ROH TV. The Hammerstein Ballroom made a major difference and it was clear that more of an effort was put into making the show more special than usual. There was plenty of solid wrestling along with a title match in the main event, a surprise appearance from Homicide and progression (if you can call it that) with the Athena and Starkz storyline.
