TNA iMPACT! Review - September 26, 2024

TNA Knockouts World Champion Jordynne Grace and Sol Ruca def. Rosemary and Wendy Choo by Disqualification

Grace's partner had to be something from NXT and it was logical for it to be Ruca considering they faced off for the TNA Knockouts World Championship on WWE NXT a few weeks ago. They worked well together as partners and had an enjoyable match with Rosemary and Choo (who won their first match as a team on Tuesday's NXT). I didn't love the disqualification finish, but I guess it prevented the heels from eating another loss. Tasha Steelz attacked the babyfaces before Masha Slamovich made the save, so are we headed for a multi-woman match for the title at Bound for Glory?

Jonathan Gresham def. Laredo Kid

I don't know what purpose this was supposed to serve other than to give Gresham a win, but both guys had solid showings and it was a well-worked match while it lasted. Gresham hasn't been able to get much going since returning to TNA, so it will be interesting to see if this win for him actually amounts to anything for him or if it was intended to kill television time and nothing more.

Zachary Wentz and ABC def. Leon Slater, Kushida and TNA X-Division Champion "Speedball" Mike Bailey

Bailey just beat Wentz at Victory Road to regain the TNA X-Division Championship, so it looks like they're still feuding over the title heading into Bound for Glory. I assume we'll get some sort of multi-man match for the belt, though personally, I'd prefer a one-on-one rematch. This was as fun as you'd expect given the talent involved. I don't know if they did this on purpose, but Wentz is facing Wes Lee again on NXT's CW premiere episode next Tuesday, so it was smart for him to win here.

Lei Ying Lee def. Hyan

Needless to say, Lee is the former Xia Li from WWE. She's improved quite a bit over the years, but the constant start-and-stop pushes did her no favors. She had that short-lived feud with Becky Lynch last year, but she disappeared from TV as soon as that was over. She'll be a nice addition to the Knockouts division and this was a good debut for her. I thought she might be a heel, but it looks like she'll be a babyface going forward.

Josh Alexander and Sinner and Saint Attacked Eric Young and Steve Maclin

Damn, I was really hoping Alexander was going to issue an open challenge at Bound for Glory and that it'd be accepted by AJ Styles. I know that sounds completely crazy, but with the working relationship that TNA has now with WWE/NXT, anything's possible. Instead, Young vs. Alexander appears to be the plan for event based on what we saw here. I don't know how Maclin factors into that, unless it's some sort of a tag team match that I don't care about. The segment was fine.

Heather Reckless def. Xia Brookside

Reckless helped Ash by Elegance beat Brookside a few weeks ago, so this was Brookside's chance to bounce back. I was actually surprised Brookside lost again, but I'm glad Reckless is winning matches out of the gate and that she'll likely end up having an alliance with Ash. There wasn't anything out of the ordinary about this from an in-ring standpoint, but it accomplished what it needed to.

Joe Hendry def. Frankie Kazarian in a TNA World Championship No. 1 Contender's Match

Seeing these two against each other reminded me that Kazarian beat Hendry back in June at Against All Odds for no real reason and Hendry wasn't able to avenge that loss until now. Granted, Kazarian won at first, but Santino Marella restarted the match when he realized Kazarian cheated. All in all, this was an entertaining main event and Hendry getting the shot against Nic Nemeth at Bound for Glory is the right call.

Overall Show

TNA is decent job of putting together the card for Bound for Glory, which is still a month away. We now know what the main event will be and several other matches have been teased. Unfortunately, it might be a lot of multi-person matches and not as many grudge matches with actual stories, but time will tell. At any rate, this was an adequate edition of iMPACT! with the opener and the main event standing out specifically because of Ruca's appearance and what was at stake in Hendry vs. Kazarian.
