Kevin Owens def. Sami Zayn, Finn Balor and Gunther in an Undisputed WWE Championship No. 1 Contender's Fatal 4-Way MatchTo call this a pleasant surprise would be putting it mildly. Zayn vs. Balor would have delivered regardless, but adding Gunther to the mix followed by the returning Owens was a hell of a swerve. That immediately made the beginning of this show must-see. The actual match was a treat, though I would've appreciated it getting a few more minutes. I guess this means we're getting Owens vs. CM Punk as the next program for the Undisputed WWE title. Holy shit! Baron Corbin def. Trick Williams to Win the United States ChampionshipTalk about a comedown match. I like both of these guys, but they simply did not have great chemistry here. They didn't click, there were several awkward spots and Lil Yatchy's involvement was more of a hinderance than a help. On the bright side, Corbin taking the title was the correct outcome. This is the best he's been booked on the main roster in many years (that's a low bar but still) and it would have been a mistake to not capitalize on that. Chelsea Green def. Women's United States Champion Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend in a 5-Way Ladder Match to Become the Interim WWE Women's Champion (Women's United States Championship Was Not Defended)As much as I didn't think yet another Ladder match was necessary on one of WWE's bigger stages, they made the most of this one and had a fun matchup. It wasn't always super smooth, but all five women had a chance to shine and the crowd was super behind Green throughout. I'm happy they went with her as the winner, which made for a massive reaction. My only gripe is that I wish she was better booked, because if she isn't protected to at least some degree going forward, this "interim" title reign will be a failure. Danhausen def. AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio in a Human Monies on a Pole Match (AAA Mega Championship Was Not Defended)Had Mysterio gone over, he would've won back the $100,000 Danhausen stole from him. Ugh. I have largely loved Danhausen's shtick this year, but this match absolutely had no business being on the SummerSlam card, and it's even more egregious that Mysterio lost (especially while still AAA Mega champ). I'm sure there were those who enjoyed it (including the crowd), but I did not. I just found this stupid. The only nice thing I can say is that it didn't waste too much time. Chad Gable def. Penta to Win the Intercontinental ChampionshipWhile I personally preferred their first-ever encounter from the second Raw of 2025, this was still a very good match with some strong wrestling. My only issue was that it was too short. It needed a few more minutes to get to that next level. The important thing is that Gable won and became champ. It was long overdue and an awesome moment for him in his home state. It's cool they allowed him to soak it in afterward by having his family in the ring with him along with the promo. World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns def. Seth RollinsThis was exactly what I assumed it would be in that it was slower-paced yet "cinematic" in nature. Sometimes that can result in a boring bout, but this was wisely structured and the many callbacks were well done. The crowd only got more into the action as it progressed and were hot for the nearfalls down the stretch. Reigns retaining was never in doubt for me, but it was an excellent main event on the whole, and Reigns and Rollins bumping fists afterward was a fantastic way to end their long-running rivalry. Overall ShowI've seen it said that Night 2 was way better than Night 1, but I thought they were pretty comparable. There were more highlights on Night 2, but Williams vs. Corbin was whatever and the Human Monies on a Pole match was completely skippable. Everything else was entertaining. With the positives outweighing the negatives between the two nights, this should be remembered as a satisfying SummerSlam weekend.
