By Graham "GSM" Matthews This weekly blog will document my firsthand experiences as a student at Endicott College. Additionally, I will attempt to offer advice to fellow college students or those looking to attend college down the line. I have mentioned in past posts that I have opted not to go home since initially leaving for college on September 1. It wasn't that I didn't miss my friends and family, my reasoning was that going home would mean more had I waited longer to go home. Some may find that to be a bit crazy, but that was my mindset. Sure enough, upon arriving home this Friday night, my theory proved to be effective. In the weeks leading up to my departure for college, I maintained a mindset that helped me put everything into perspective. I knew I was going to miss a lot of things about being home, but at the time, I also really wanted to leave home and begin the next chapter in my life. In missing my friends and family, I remembered that it wasn't goodbye forever, but simply goodbye for now. I was going to see them all again, and as the famous line saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder. In a nutshell, I was excited about coming home from college before I had even left! I kept that thought in the back of my mind during the three months I was at college for. When everyone else went home for Columbus Day weekend and other events, I stayed. I wanted to come home for Thanksgiving and not any earlier. As previously stated, going home for the first time in nearly three months was going to mean more than being home for the first time in five weeks. I was extremely excited to go home over the last week, and Friday could have come any quicker. After a near three hour drive, I was finally back home.
Sleeping in my own bed that night was fantastic, as was waking up in the morning and not worrying about waking up my roommates. Although my room had been completely rearranged since the last time I was home, it was still nice to get my own privacy, seeing how I didn't have much of it with two other roommates while in college. Eating food that wasn't made in my school's cafeteria was also a refreshing change of pace. Everything about being home thus far has been great and everything I hoped it would be, so I look forward to the next week, especially Thanksgiving being this Thursday. I played in the pep band during high school and almost always had to play at the football game the night before Thanksgiving. I remember making a promise to myself that I would never be one of those graduates who would accentuate my ego by returning to the school to "catch up" with familiar faces. I was always annoyed by that, as I would imagine that you would have better things to do than to go back to your old high school to hang out with underclassmen. I have made plans to go to my school at some point in the next week to visit a few of my awesome teachers from years past, but definitely not to see any of my old classmates. I can honestly say I don't miss any of them one bit! Of course, it has only been two days and anything is bound to happen for the rest of the week that I am home, but it will be a nice break away from the college life that I have become so accustomed to for the last few months. I have a whole list of things I hope to get done during my time home, so it will certainly be an exciting seven days for sure. By the time I get back to college at the start of December, I will only be there for three weeks before coming home for Christmas, so I expect the rest of the year to be over within the blink of an eye. Time sure does fly when you're having fun. |
