By Graham "GSM" Matthews Kofi Kingston def. Tyson Kidd Kingston and Kidd are capable of having really good matches as we've seen in the past, but The New Day gimmick held it back from being better. It's painfully apparent the crowd isn't behind them since they fail to chant along. It was a decent match, but Kingston winning made me cringe. Granted, the heels got their heat back afterward by attacking The New Day, but they've lost all their matches so far, so how can the crowd take them seriously? I'm sure the six-man match on Sunday will be entertaining from an in-ring standpoint, but were doomed from the start of this "feud." The Miz and Damien Mizdow def. Los Matadores This was obviously a last minute attempt to get heat on the heels before they contend for the WWE Tag Team Championship on Sunday. However, my interest remains in whether Miz and Mizdow ultimately split up during the Royal Rumble match. This match was essentially throwaway, but I guess it was better than having face either Jimmy or Jey Uso for the millionth time.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar Called Out Seth Rollins Is it just me or has Lesnar spoke more in the last two weeks than he has in his entire run with WWE the last few years? Either way, he's been simple and effective in his short stints on the mic, and I love how Seth Rollins has been holding his own against him (including here). John Cena was good in this segment as well, but I fear all the talk of him being a failure will lead to a title win for him at Royal Rumble. Whether he captures the gold or not on Sunday remains to be seen, but they've really peaked my interest with this three-way rivalry over the belt. I loathe long talking segments at the start of Raw as much as the next guy, but at least this set up a big match with Cena for later on in the show. Bray Wyatt def. Daniel Bryan This two had one of the best matches of 2014 at last year's Royal Rumble event and it was cool to see that rivalry renewed here. I didn't expect them to have the same match they did on that show and the two commercials hindered its momentum, but it was still very good for the time it was given and I was surprised to see Wyatt score the victory. I wasn't a fan of Bryan losing his second week back (especially after interference from Kane for what felt like the millionth time), but Wyatt needed the win more, it put heat on Kane going into their match on Thursday's SmackDown, and Bryan fits the underdog persona to perfection. Nothing is off limits, and this week’s edition touches upon a variety of topics including:
By Graham "GSM" Matthews The Beatdown Clan (and Eric Young) Explained Their Actions The Beatdown Clan? Really? I was hoping for a better name for the faction, but I guess it somewhat makes sense since MVP has been referring to his friendship with Joe and Low Ki as a "clan" for a while now in interviews. In all honesty, as good of a talker as MVP is, this felt like a long, drawn-out promo that you'd see from The Authority at the start of Raw. I was fine with MVP tying together the ending of last week's show, but it would have been more beneficial if they split this segment up by having Young talk later in the night instead of cramming it at the start of the program. Samoa Joe def. Kurt Angle Obviously, these two go way back and it's near-impossible for them to have a bad match. They contested a good match here, but nothing as great as some of their past encounters. Angle is still trying to find his groove since returning as a wrestler and Joe was a fitting first opponent for him. I was shocked to not only see Joe go over clean, but doing so by forcing Angle to tap out. I don't know how smart it was to make Angle lose his second match back, but it a lot to lend some credibility to Joe as well as the new stable he's now a part of. |
