WWE 205 Live Review - January 31, 2020

Joaquin Wilde def. Raul Mendoza

This marked Wilde's second win on 205 Live, whereas he has yet to win a single match on NXT. Maybe he'd just be better off on 205 Live full-time. However, my issues with his character have not changed. He still comes across like a heel with his dumb DJ noises, and while I realize that's a part of who he is in real life, he was way more natural as a heel during his IMPACT run and simply isn't likable at all in the babyface role. At any rate, this was a fun little match between the two despite the crowd sitting on their hands for it.

Danny Burch def. The Brian Kendrick by Disqualification

I enjoy Burch as a performer, but he's no miracle worker. That isn't meant to be a slight against Kendrick, but this rivalry has been a total dud so far. There wasn't anything technically wrong with it, but I was bored beyond belief and the disqualification finish was lame. Thankfully, Oney Lorcan resurfaced afterward and came to Burch's aid, which I figured was inevitable after he returned on Thursday's episode of NXT UK.

King Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode Interrupted Roman Reigns and The Usos

I honestly can't believe WWE decided to continue the feud with Reigns and Corbin. It ran its course a while ago, but I was sincerely hoping it was over after Reigns beat Corbin in that Falls Count Anywhere match at the Royal Rumble. Apparently not. It was bad enough that these two trios were going to clash again in the main event, but the "Loser Eats Dog Food" stipulation that was added here made matters that much worse. In short, this segment was as basic as could be.

John Morrison & The Miz def. The Lucha House Party, The Revival, and Heavy Machinery in a SmackDown Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contender's Fatal 4-Way Match

Wasn't there a SmackDown Tag Team Championship number one contender's Fatal 4-Way match a month or two ago with Mustafa Ali and Shorty G replacing Miz and Morrison? I guess it's better than Miz and Morrison beating The New Day in a non-title match and making them look weak in the process. Plus, this was an entertaining four-way with everyone getting their time to shine and the right team earning the title shot. I hate that Miz and Morrison might win their first set of tag titles together in over a decade in Saudi Arabia at Super ShowDown, but at least the segments leading up to it have the potential to be a blast.

Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch def. The Hunt

Lorcan has been off TV since it was reported he requested his release back in November (it was later reported he re-signed with WWE), so it was great to see him resurface here. Meanwhile, The Hunt are a fun tag team but have yet to receive a meaningful push toward the NXT UK Tag Team Championship. This match had the potential to be better, but it was decent while it lasted. Lorcan and Burch are on the right track as they set their sights on the NXT UK Tag Team Championship.

Trent Seven Challenged Eddie Dennis to a Steel Corners Street Fight

I believe this marked the first time Dennis has spoke since returning to NXT UK. He discussed his win over Seven at TakeOver: Blackpool II before being interrupted by Seven, who then challenged him to a Steel Corners Street Fight next week on NXT UK because of Dennis used the exposed turnbuckle corner in their first match to beat him. It's a unique stipulation and I'm interested to see how they pull it off.

Jon Moxley and Inner Circle Brawled

I absolutely love how Moxley is still wearing his eye patch two weeks removed from the "injury" he suffered at the hands of Chris Jericho. I'm not a huge fan of Dynamite kicking off with drawn-out talking segments, but this worked, especially since Moxley is an Ohio native. Moxley sounded motivated on the mic and I enjoyed his exchange with Jericho. His brawl with Inner Circle and their backup didn't last long, but Moxley was able to escape in one piece. It's going to be a big deal when Moxley eventually gets his hands on Jericho.

The Young Bucks def. The butcher and The Blade

A brief video aired beforehand revealing that MJF has some sort of business arrangement with The Butcher, The Bunny and The Blade, which has been hinted at for weeks. They're basically MJF's punching bags, and as skilled as they are in the ring, I still can't bring myself to care about their characters. The Bucks got a good match out of them and the crowd was into their offense. The Elite (somewhat) reunited afterward when Kenny Omega and Adam Page helped the Bucks lay out Butcher and Blade. I assume the Bucks vs. Omega and Page for the AEW World Tag Team Championship will be added to the Revolution pay-per-view.

Finn Balor def. Trent Seven

When Balor attempted to ambush Johnny Gargano backstage at Worlds Collide, Moustache Mountain made the save, leading to this match. Balor's newfound aggression has been a breath of fresh air as far as his matches go and Seven was his usual excellent self. It was a very hard-hitting affair and Balor went over he should have. The outcome was never in doubt, but I enjoyed this for what it was.

Shotzi Blackheart def. Deonna Purrazzo

Blackheart eliminated Purrazzo from the Battle Royal two weeks ago and Purrazzo vowed revenge by attacking her backstage following last week's episode. Blackheart has a ton of potential and has boatloads of charisma, but she's a work in progress in the ring. Purrazzo is the better wrestler of the two, but she doesn't stand out nearly as much. This was a decent match that gave Blackheart a nice momentum-boosting victory.
