Tomasso Ciampa Explained His Actions

Apparently Ciampa's logic for turning on Johnny Gargano at TakeOver: Chicago was that he thought the fans felt he was replaceable coming off his injuries prior to and at the event itself. I figured they would go a different route after the many times it was teased he would turn on him late last year, but this was fine, too. Perhaps it's because I haven't heard Ciampa talk too much before, but I didn't love his delivery of this promo, but I'm sure he'll come into his own as a heel eventually. It looks like he'll out on the shelf for a while, but at least he went out on a good note by ripping into the fans.

WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne def. Danny Burch (Non-title)

Dunne simply radiates super stardom and as I said in an article last week, he could arrive on the main roster tomorrow and thrive. From his badass look to his exceptional in-ring ability to his remarkable mic skills, he has the complete package. Burch is a hell of a hand in the ring as well and I really wish NXT would re-sign him to a deal because he has a lot to offer. These two had a very hard-hitting, entertaining affair and Dunne's post-match promo was also excellent.

Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo vs. The Mack in an All Night Long Match Ended in a Draw

This was the perfect way to ring in the second half of Lucha Underground's third season. I have fond memories of that first All Night Long match between Prince Puma and Mundo from Season 1, and while this wasn't quite as amazing, it was still excellent in its own right. I liked that, similar to last time, Mundo took the early lead and even fooled the fans in thinking he was actually injured by selling it for a while before revealing the ruse and getting another pinfall over Mack, that ate up some time effectively. The story was even better in the second half as, true to his character, Mundo attempted to avoid Mack at every turn and enlisted the help of his stablemate PJ Black to act as a body double for him, which was pretty clever. I'm not typically not huge on interference, but Black, Ricky Mandel, Son of Havoc and Sexy Star (she had me convinced when she was disguised as a member of the mariachi band) played their roles well and added to the drama down the stretch. Hell, even the cheap promotional plug for the Modelo beer was well done. The crowd was crazy hot for the fantastic final minutes of the match with the terrific table spots and Mack getting a two count before time ran out. Obviously, the crowd was not pleased with that ending, but the night ended on a high note when Dario Cueto announced that the bout would pick up where it left off next week! God bless Lucha Underground.

Overall Show

As noted, comparing this All Night Long match to the original isn't fair because both bouts are awesome and should be enjoyed for what they are. Lucha Underground is known for its exceptional action and this matchup was a prime example of that, as well as a hopeful sign of what's to come. They definitely did a great job of ensuring viewers return next week to see what happens in the conclusion of this championship clash. Lucha Underground is back, baby, and I could not be any more excited.

#AskGSM is a weekly Q&A video where I, Graham "GSM" Matthews answer fan questions from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in regards to the world of wrestling. Nothing is off limits, and this week’s edition touches upon a variety of topics including:

  • Does Finn Balor's "Demon" persona need tweaking?
  • Was Backlash essentially a good episode of SmackDown Live?
  • Thoughts on Shinsuke Nakamura's polarizing promo from Tuesday night?
  • Should Dolph Ziggler win the Money in the Bank Ladder match?
  • Is it a shame that we'll likely never get to see Brock Lesnar vs. Cesaro?
  • Who will win the women's Money in the Bank Ladder match?
  • Who will Asuka ultimately lose to and when will she be main roster bound?
  • Thoughts on the current state of WWE Raw?
  • Immediate reaction to the controversial This Is Your Life segment from Raw?
  • Has the Neville vs. Austin Aries feud been disappointing as of late?
  • And MUCH more!

Adam Cole Interrupted The Bullet Club

Marty Scurll is such a perfect fit for The Bullet Club, and despite how they aren't clearly defined as either babyfaces or heels in Ring of Honor, you have to give them credit for reinventing themselves at every turn. I was honestly shocked to see Cole surface here, as I thought War of the Worlds marked his final date with ROH, but perhaps he stuck around to finish up at the post-pay-per-view tapings. Either way, this was a hot start to the show.

Josh "The Goods" Woods def. David Starr

It took them long enough to follow up on this angle from a while ago, but that's typically par for the course with ROH. Nevertheless, this was a nice little match where both men were able to shine. Starr may not be the biggest guy, but he has a ton of charisma and obviously he was beloved by this crowd due to being a Philadelphia native. That said, it was logical for Woods to go over considering he is fresh off winning the Top Prospect Tournament and it would have sent the wrong message if he lost here.

Noam Dar def. Rich Swann

You could have aired a replay of the Raw match these two had on Monday night and very little would have been different outside of the outcome. Swann and Dar have good matches, but the issue is that we've seen them face off so many times in the past that it's hard to care at this point. Plus, 50/50 booking does no one any favors, especially in the Cruiserweight division where virtually nobody is over. Sasha Banks and Alicia Fox fighting at ringside popped the crowd a bit, but it was a far cry from the brawl the women had on SmackDown Live just an hour earlier.

Cedric Alexander def. Corey Hollis

I liked that Alexander was given some mic time before the bout to talk about his return from injury and how he'll be making up for the lost time by racking up victories. Similar to last week, this was a straightforward squash match, though Hollis scored more offense over Alexander than I thought he would. Nevertheless, it was a decisive win for Alexander and I look forward to seeing him find direction again soon.
