By Graham "GSM" Matthews Stardust def. Jack Swagger It's cool to see Stardust keeping the cape he debuted at WrestleMania as part of his entrance. As much as I despise the character, there's no denying Cody makes it work to the best of his ability and puts 110% effort into it. Speaking of whom, the "Cody" chants are still prevalent, so I wonder if the end game is still him ditching the Stardust persona and going back to being Cody Rhodes. In any event, this was a good match from two great athletes. It wasn't anything mind-blowing and Swagger hasn't meant anything in quite some time, but it was a nice win for Stardust coming off his loss on Raw this week. Paige and Emma def. Summer Rae and Cameron I was glad the commentators acknowledged the storied history and friendship of Paige and Emma, but if you didn't watch them on NXT, you'd be confused as to why they were tagging because they haven't crossed paths much on the main roster. Summer and Cameron have been appearing alongside each other for a few weeks now, so their tandem made a bit more sense. They were given more time to shine than usual and they made the most of it. Moreover, I loved seeing Emma being taken seriously for once. She's in the midst of a heel turn on NXT right now and it'd be great to see that on the main roster eventually.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews Brock Lesnar Called Out WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins You had to know Lesnar and Paul Heyman were going to be treated like babyfaces by this post-WrestleMania crowd, so they took the right approach with Heyman's promo. The crowd ate up everything he was saying and was the perfect follow-up to the events that transpired at the end of WrestleMania. The tease for Lesnar wrestling his first Raw match in over a decade was a major hook for the rest of the show and came across as very special. The person who lost the title kicking off the show instead of the new champion was a refreshing change of pace (plus, anything beats an Authority promo). Intercontinental Champion Daniel Bryan def. Dolph Ziggler; Sheamus Returned WWE was wise to put two huge fan favorites against each other in front of the smarky crowd as they were very receptive to the awesome action. Also, it's not like Ziggler didn't earn his shot since he technically already beat Bryan twice in the weeks before WrestleMania so it made sense. As expected, they worked a great match and it was cool to see the Intercontinental title spotlighted for once, but whether it will continue is the real question. The Sheamus return and subsequent heel turn was logically/perfectly booked. His new look is freaky, but very fitting of a heel and it's nice to see him reinventing himself. They need more legitimate heels right now and Sheamus fits that role to a tee. This was also the best possible crowd to turn in front of as well. Nothing is off limits, and this week’s edition touches upon a variety of topics including:
By Graham "GSM" Matthews WWE Tag Team Cesaro and Tyson Kidd def. The Usos, The New Day, and Los Matadores in a Fatal 4-Way Match (Kickoff Show) As I've expressed before, I couldn't have cared less about this match going in, but it was everything I expected it to be: a total spot-fest. That's not to say it was a bad thing, though, as it was a very fun opener and everyone involved worked hard. Special kudos to Jimmy Uso for working most of the match as Jey was seemingly out injured for most of it. Natalya, El Torito and definitely Naomi definitely added to it, never allowing a dull moment to settle in. Cesaro and Kidd were the right winners here, but honestly, they along with The Usos deserved to be on the main card. The tag team title match shouldn't be relegated to the Kickoff show every year. Big Show Won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal (Kickoff Show) Much like last year, this matchup was a complete mess. Originally, 20 Superstars were announced to compete in the match, so why bother adding ten extra bums (though I did enjoy seeing Alex Riley for a brief bit)? To its credit, there were a few more stories told than last year, specifically with The Miz and Damien Mizdow. Their angle has been beautifully built since it started in August and Mizdow finally breaking away from Miz and eliminating him here made for a glorious moment. I guess WWE felt it was too predictable that Mizdow would win, so they went with Big Show instead. I get it: Big Show is this generation's Andre the Giant, but everyone he eliminated seemed to be leading to something special, and it never did. Him taking out Hideo Itami was especially annoying as I felt he should have had a better showing (better him than Finn Balor or Adrian Neville, right?). You really mean to tell me that there wasn't another heel who could have used this rub instead? If nothing else, I'm glad WWE got this out of the way on the Kickoff show, so bumping it from the main card was the best thing they could have possibly done. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Jeff Hardy Interrupted James Storm Storm and Hardy both cut decent promos, but this segment was all over the place. Members of The Revolution were attacking Hardy only for him to overcome the odds and get the better of them. Hardy showed good intensity, though, which is something we don't often see from him. It's cool they're using the fact that Storm put Hardy out of commission a few months ago as the reason why they're now feuding, but it would've been nice if they built up the Steel Cage match for a few weeks before getting right into it. X-Division Champion Rockstar Spud def. Low Ki Spud and Low Ki have similar styles and they worked a fun match. Granted, Spud and the title were merely background players to Drew Galloway's distraction at ringside, but it protected Low Ki in defeat and left the door open for a future rematch. The roll-up also played perfectly into Spud's underdog persona and he can have a really enjoyable run with the belt if his reign mirrors his character. |
