By Graham "GSM" Matthews King Cuerno def. Fenix to Win the Gift of the Gods Championship Did these two previously have history from the first season? For some reason, I feel like they did. I definitely have to watch the Season 1 Recap they put up one of these days. At any rate, this highly entertaining matchup was a great way of ringing in the new year as there never seemed to be a dull moment. The title change took me by surprise considering Fenix captured the championship at Ultima Lucha and has a ready-made feud with Mil Muertes given their past, but they could always get the belt back on him at some point. Plus, it established that anything can happen when you least expect it in Lucha Undergrund. If you're new to the promotion, expect much more of this throughout the season. Ivelisse def. Son of Havoc and Angelico in a No. 1 Contender's Triple Threat Match for the Lucha Underground Championship It seemed strange at first to pit three former tag team champions against each other, but they set it up nicely with Catrina promising the winner of the Triple Threat an immediate shot at the Lucha Underground Championship that same night. Intergender wrestling may bother some, as it does me at times, but Ivelisse is so fluid and fun in the the ring that she doesn't feel out of place whatsoever in the ring with the men. Everyone involved was able to get their signature spots in before Ivelisse scored the shocking win, which undoubtedly built intrigue heading into the main event.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews American Alpha def. Blake and Murphy American Alpha continues to take the tag team division by storm as I'm entertained by all of their matches. This outing against Blake and Murphy was no exception, and while Blake and Murphy don't do much for me, they are solid hands in the ring and deserve credit for holding their own here. Picking up a win over a set of former NXT Tag Team Champions definitely adds to the building credibility and momentum of American Alpha and I'm hoping they earn themselves a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championship at NXT TakeOver: Dallas. Nia Jax def. Liv Morgan Jax has undoubtedly improved in the ring since her debut several months ago and believe it or not, I actually like her pairing with Eva Marie. It will help her elicit heat and, more importantly, it keeps Eva Marie out of the ring! Or at least momentarily. The match itself was a glorified squash with Morgan scoring a few offensive maneuvers only to be decimated in the end. Based off what we saw a few weeks back, I assume Asuka will be feuding with Jax and Eva sooner rather than later. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Brian Fury def. Shaheem Ali in a Top Prospect Tournament Round 1 Match While it's always great to see fresh faces, the disadvantage of these matches (for me, anyway) is that I know very little if anything about them, so it makes it harder for me to care about either competitor. I've heard of Fury before, but never Ali. Nevertheless, both guys impressed me with their entertaining offense and the commentators did a good job of introducing them to viewers by talking about their respective backgrounds. Obviously, the crowd is much more familiar with these two than I am, so they didn't sit on their hands the whole time but were instead engaged in the action. I'm excited to see who else shows up in the tournament in the upcoming weeks. Cedric Alexander def. Cheeseburger Veda Scott tried her best to build up Alexander with her pre-match promo, but he's been heavily damaged these past few months since his feud with Moose ended in September. He's eaten one two many losses, and that's not to say he isn't a great wrestler. He was able to show off his moveset quite a bit in this bout, and although Cheeseburger was able to incorporate a few hope spots, Alexander went over strong as he should have. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Jeff Hardy Called Out TNA World Heavyweight Champion Matt Hardy Although Matt is a natural babyface, he has flourished as a heel in the past and he has already settled into his new role as seen in this segment. It was logical to have The Hardy Boyz kick off the show following the events that transpired last week and their back-and-forth on the mic was kept short and sweet as it should have been without giving too much away. It also effectively set up their title match in the main event later on in the night. Grado, Drew Galloway, Eli Drake and James Storm Won Feast or Fired Briefcases I've never been a fan of the Feast or Fired concept simply because the match itself is an absolute mess. The crowd sat on their hands for a majority of the match, and while I realize it was likely because it was late in the taping, the match itself is just total anarchy (not in the good way) and hard to follow. Who would want to cheer someone winning a briefcase if they're potentially getting fired? It didn't help that the match mostly featured wrestlers that the audience couldn't care less about. |
