WWE NXT Level Up Review - September 8, 2023

Tavion Heights def. Ikemen Jiro

Jiro obviously loses a lot, but he'll pick up the occasional win so it means something when he loses. That's why I figured he'd win here and was pleasantly surprised when he didn't. Nothing against Jiro, but Heights has been around long enough to where he should start racking up some victories. Jiro is the perfect person for him to work with and they had a fun little sprint. Hopefully Heights makes his way to NXT TV before long.

Fallon Henley def. Karmen Petrovic

Petrovic has shown a lot of potential thus far. Henley, meanwhile, isn't doing much on NXT TV these days, so it makes sense for her to be working with the newer women on Level Up to stay busy. They ended up having a solid match with Petrovic again holding her own before eating defeat. Honestly, I thought she impressed more with her promo this week. She certainly has a presence about her.

Joe Coffey def. Akira Tozawa in an NXT Global Heritage Invitational Match

It’s clear at this point that Tozawa is only in the NXT Global Heritage Invitational because he’s an established name who can lose to everyone else in his group. At least he can be counted on for good matches, though. This was another fun outing from him as he had nice chemistry with Coffey and sold really well for his offense. I’m glad Coffey is getting the singles spotlight after being a background player in Gallus since their arrival in NXT.

Overall Show

Once again, the NXT Global Heritage match was a big boost to this show. Even though the outcome wasn’t really in doubt, Tozawa vs. Coffey could have easily taken place on NXT TV. This ended up being a thumbs-up show between that, the women exceeding expectations, and Heights scoring his first big singles win. By Level Up standards, this was an above-average episode. I’m enjoying this increase in quality for the program while it lasts.
