AEW Dark: Elevation Review - August 29, 2022

Dante Martin def. Wes Barkley

Despite my gripes with his booking over the last year, Martin remains a blast to watch in the ring. These enhancement matches allow him to showcase his skills and wow the audience with what he can do. This was only around a minute long and there was no need for it to be any longer than that considering his opponent wasn't anyone we know. Hopefully these wins can translate to something meaningful on TV eventually.

Julia Hart def. Arie Alexander

Elevation has become the Julia Hart Show this summer. It feels like she's been featured on every episode as of late and a majority of them are the same. This was slightly longer, but not much was different about it. She's better than she was but still not ready for a full-length match it seems. Then again, that's what this show is for, so I don't have anything to complain about. It served its purpose.

Nyla Rose and Marina Shafir def. Skye Blue and Queen Aminata

On the subject on complaining, I was continue to complain about Rose and Shafir being paired up until Tony Khan finally realizes it's not good. That's not Rose's fault (she deserves better), but rather Shafir's since she has hardly improved. I mean, look no further than her execution of the tag team finisher at the end here. It looked terrible, not to mention she's as beyond boring as a personality. The problem is that I don't know what you'd do with Rose otherwise. I know I mentioned in the previous paragraph that Elevation is a show where people can get better, but I have no faith at this point that's going to be the case with Shafir.

Matt Hardy def. RSP

I've been really digging what Hardy's been doing on Being The Elite over the last month or two by attempting to make it up to Private Party for "derailing" their careers. I'm sure he was a huge help to them behind the scenes, but the pairing definitely didn't them any favors on TV and that's a fault of the booking, not Hardy himself. Private Party watched this match from the stage, so it seems the storyline may be making its way to TV soon (or at least Rampage). RSP looked really impressive in there before eating defeat.

Serena Deeb def. Katie Arquette

I'm sure I've said before because I'm pretty sure we've seen her on AEW programming before, but I'd be shocked if Arquette wasn't related to actor and former WCW World Heavyweight Champion David Arquette. At any rate, this was your typical Deeb squash where she dismantled her opponent with a series of holds and won in decisive fashion. I'd like to see her back on AEW TV soon doing something after the excellent work she did in her feuds with Thunder Rosa and Mercedes Martinez.

Frankie Kazarian def. Andrea Guercio

I feel like it's been a bit since we last saw Kazarian in action. He had a renewed role on TV earlier this year in the AEW TNT Championship picture and even got a match at Double or Nothing out of it, but AEW has had nothing of note for him since then. That's a shame because I'm a Kazarian fan and would like to see him doing more since he's closer to the end of his career than the beginning. This was solid stuff.

Rush, The Butcher and The Blade def. Elijah, Zach Nystorm and Chase Oliver

It was revealed on this week's Being The Elite that Private Party are still under contract to Andrade El Idolo, which means Butcher and Blade are as well. The Andrade Family Office have not been a thing in many months, so I have no idea why that is. On the bright side, this was total domination from the heels as each of them took turns destroying their unknown opponents. Butcher and Blade do nothing for me, but Rush always stands out.

Regina Di WAVE Champion Hikaru Shida def. Emi Sakura

It's been nice to see an actual feud develop on Elevation these past few weeks between these two. I don't particularly care about Sakura, but there's no denying her talent in the ring. The Regina Di WAVE Championship is from Japan's WAVE promotion, so that being on the line made this match more meaningful. I don't know why they only got six or seven minutes, but this was very good stuff for as long as it lasted. Shida can add more gold to her collection by winning the AEW Interim Women's World Championship at All Out on Sunday, though I don't think she will (or should).

Overall Show

This was the case last week as well, but the commentary team consisted of Excalibur and Matt Menard. It was a refreshing chase and I thought Menard did well in the role. I assume Menard will return to the ring and leave the booth once he's cleared to compete. The show itself was enjoyable by Elevation standards and the above-average main event was a welcome treat. Most Elevation shows that are around 45 minutes long like this one tend to get an automatic thumbs-up from me.
