AEW Dark Review - December 27, 2022

Angelico def. Dante Casanova

Angelico hasn't meant anything in ages, and although he apparently is a part of a new faction with Chaos Project called Spanish Announce Project, I don't see him being booked any better than he has been for the last three years. Truthfully, I'm shocked he's still on the roster while Jack Evans was let go. I feel bad saying that because he's a talented dude and there was nothing wrong with this match, but in the end, it was pretty pointless.

The Workhorsemen def. The Hughes Brothers

I always enjoy watching The Workhorsemen work because they have excellent chemistry together and their intensity helps them stand out in AEW's tag team division (even though they primarily compete on the Dark shows). This was more competitive than I thought it would be, but I'm not complaining since The Hughes Brothers are the real-life sons of D-Von Dudley and have impressed in the past. This was solid stuff.

Fuego Del Sol def. Lucky Ali

Fuego cut a promo for the live crowd before the bout trying to get them behind him. He had a great thing going when he was trying to earn an AEW contract last year, but now it feels like we barely see him and he's lost a lot of that momentum. To his credit, he's a skilled competitor, as seen in this short and sweet squash. I assume we'll see him lose to someone on the roster one of these days because, well, what was the point of this otherwise?

"Daddy Magic" Matt Menard def. Brock Anderson

Anderson cut a good promo backstage beforehand talking about how the Andersons are all on their own now (damn you, Cody!). I don't know how bright of a future Brock has as a singles star, but getting more experience on the Dark shows isn't necessarily a bad thing. Meanwhile, Menard doing singles stuff for the first time in a while is a positive. These two had a well-wrestled affair with the right outcome.

Red Velvet def. Billie Starkz

I believe this marked Velvet's first singles match since returning to the ring from injury. As for Starkz, I've seen plenty of people praise her on social media. I was curious to see what she was all about, but she didn't have a chance to live up to the hype because this was basically a squash for Velvet and nothing more. As I've said before, Velvet is much better as a heel and I'm glad she's back alongside Jade Cargill.

Iron Savages def. Brandon Bullock and Jameson Ryan

The former Bear Country were without their manager/mouthpiece here. They've been "repackaged" for months now and have yet to resurface on AEW TV, so these wins have to amount to something eventually, right? Otherwise, these matches aren't accomplishing anything. They made quick work of their opponents and looked good doing it, but I'm going to care less and less about them until they start being used in a more meaningful manner.

Diamante def. Mafiosa

I'm a Diamante fan, but it's clear she's on the roster just to be on the roster at this point, if that makes sense. I'd say AEW uses her to put others over, but I feel like we barely see her on Dark, Elevation or anywhere. This was no different than the squash matches that preceded it and arguably worse because you know it isn't amounting to anything. The best thing about it is that it didn't waste a ton of time.

AR Fox def. Slim J

I'm sorry but this was hardly an exciting main event. I realize it's Dark, but the show had some star power on it last week, so there's no excuse. Don't get me wrong, I think Fox is terrific and I'm happy he's been signed, but Slim J does nothing for me whatsoever as The Trustbusters are a dud of a faction. It was a nicely paced match with a few fun moments, and if nothing else, it resulted in a victory for Fox.

Overall Show

Monday's edition of Elevation was a pleasant surprise and featured a handful of quality matchups. Unfortunately, Dark this week was completely devoid of that. We got nine matches over the course of 53 minutes and none of them were remotely interesting. We were back in Universal Studios as well and that environment isn't the most lively because of how many matches they tape at one time typically. This was basic stuff from Dark and not recommended viewing.
