Cruiserweights, Light Heavyweights, Or Jobbers

Free-Style Fighting or as they say in Mexico, Lucha Libre. This type of wrestling is what we see on occasion on WWE TV now. You may have seen Sin Cara against Hunico a couple of times recently but that is pretty much it. The fast-paced fighting that keeps you on the edge of your seat because no one knows what is going to happen next. Jaw dropping moments when you see a man jump so high of the ropes you wonder if he is going to hit the ceiling. I’m sure I can speak for most of us when I say we need this!

There was a time when we had this in WWE but it was very much short-lived. The cruiserweights or some like to call them light heavyweights had some moments to shine in WWE. A time where guys who weighed in at under 220 pounds had a shot a championship gold and weren’t restricted to tag teams to get a chance at a title. The Cruiserweight Championship held by legendary superstars such as Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, and Matt Hardy just to name a few. We saw matches that had our eyes wide open hoping to see the risk taking moves suchlike 450 splashes, sentons, whispers in the winds. Do you not want to see that weekly instead of every other month?

Unfortunately the championship along with the division went down in late 2007 with the last champion being Hornswoogle. That ladies and gentlemen should tell you what the company we know and love thought of the prestigious title in its final days. As well let’s not forget the WCW Cruiserweight division either . Where guys like Psychosis, Ultimo Dragon, Billy Kidman, Dean Malenko and of course Rey delivered every night they went out there! Of course once WWE and WCW became one these guys didn’t get the same spotlight.

Looking at todays current roster we have seen some smaller guys continue to have success in the WWE without cruiserweight titles being active some even holding world titles. Guys like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, and Rey Mysterio have all held world titles if not once but once numerous occasions. Now don’t get me wrong i’m glad all have got chances but in todays world the smaller guys on the roster on considered jobbers to the WWE universe. Now we have many talented cruiserweights on the roster such as Bourne, Kingston, Kidd, Gabriel, and Hunico. With most of these guys holding titles while some not so fortunate . The titles being held by guys today are the Tag Team, United States, or Intercontinental Championships. Sure it’s a good thing that these guys have those to chase after but with the horizon of these bigger guys coming up to the roster such as Ryback, Big E Langston, Antonio Cesaro and more. It moves guys suchlike Tyson Kidd in the back of the line at having a chance at either of the mid-card championships. So lets bring back the Cruiserweight Championship right? Most of you who may not agree with me may say they’re too many titles on the current roster now and with that we can agree on. My thing is do we really need both the United States and Intercontinental Championships? Why not unify them or put one on the shelf for now. Before Cesaro won the title, honestly who cared for the US title if you even do? I for one can say I don’t even remember who he beat for the championship which is a bad thing. Lets give the Evan Bournes a shot at something other than the tag titles. You can’t say that these guys can’t pull in ratings because looking back at what TNA had with their X Division those guys were the stars of the promotion. It has even been said on programming that it helped put the promotion on the map. With three hours of programming that feels like a drag every week. There is no reason why the guys can’t get time to showcase what they can do. Not only will this give the guys something to fight for but it will give us diversity. There is only a certain amount of times a man can watch Sheamus vs The Big Show before falling asleep.
