![]() By Abiel Tesfamariam Exactly thirty years ago a very important event change the course of pro wrestling. Many people overlook this event. I think it would be blasphemy to ignore this event. This is what happened over 30 years ago today. Thirty years ago the Rock N’ Wrestling connection changed the course of professional wrestling. This first started when Captain Lou Albano when he met singer Cyndi Laupher. They were the ones who formed this idea when they first met on a plane to Puerto Rico. Vince McMahon had booked the both of them on Roddy Piper’s talk show “Piper’s Pit.” Lou called Cyndi a broad and she struck back by hitting him her purse. She ended up challenging him to a match where both would pick the wrestler of their choice. Cyndi chose Wendi Richter and Lou Albano picked Ladies Champion The Fabulous Moolah. This match was scheduled on July 23, 1984 on MTV’s “The Brawl to End It All.” At this event Wendi made history by officially dethroning the longest reigning champion of all time, The Fabulous Moolah (She held it for 28 years). Not only did Wendi beat Moolah for the champion, but MTV garnered its highest ratings at that point. That was considered the birth Rock N’ Wrestling connection. This transformed the WWE into a pop culture phenomenon that has made so many stars and memories in history. Without this event, who knows what could wrestling could have been like today. So many stars like Randy Orton, Triple H, Kurt Angle, The Rock, etc. would not be the loveable characters we loved so much today.
