By Graham "GSM" Matthews Bengala def. Delavar Daivari for an Ancient Aztec Medallion In the early days of Lucha Underground, we were treated to video packages that treated us to the debuting characters, but that wasn't the case with Bengala. Although the crowd didn't have any incentive to cheer him, his offense won them over in addition to Daivari being established as a hated heel. While the match wasn't spectacular and didn't meet the same standards as past medallion matches, it was fine for what it was and gave the new guy a nice win. All of Daivari's recent losses lead me to believe he'll be left off Ultima Lucha, but time will tell. Vampiro Agreed to Face Pentagon Jr. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well this angle with Vampiro and Pentagon has gotten over with the audience, but then again, both guys are crazy popular, so it shouldn't be too shocking. They've done a solid job of building to this point with Pentagon antagonizing Vampiro each week and the crowd popped big when Vampiro finally agreed to face him at Ultima Lucha and subsequently chokeslam him. I don't know how good the actual match will be, but the feud so far has been the best thing going in Lucha Underground as of late which is certainly saying something. King Cuerno def. Killshot for an Ancient Aztec Medallion
Haven't both Cuerno and Killshot been heels recently? I was confused as to who was supposed to be the babyface in this match, but the live crowd didn't seem to mind because they enjoyed the in-ring action as I did. I'm sure they could have delivered a more memorable match with better storyline support, but with what they were given, they contested a good match and it was nice to see Cuerno regain some lost momentum with the win. Sexy Star def. Super Fly for an Ancient Aztec Medallion Wow, could they make Super Fly look any weaker? I wasn't bothered too much by it because it's not like he was getting mega heat from the crowd, but I was surprised they had Star make quick work of him, so I guess they're not blowing off their feud at Ultima Lucha after all and that might be for the better. Their last match was rather boring, so this match being as brief as it was might have been a blessing in disguise. Sexy Star def. Marty "The Moth" Martinez to Keep Her Ancient Aztec Medallion Was the mere purpose of this match to kill time? I mean, I was entertained by it because The Moth is a great comedy character that can take a loss, but he didn't win the medallion, so it was somewhat pointless. Regardless, they had a fun little match with The Moth showing some fire in the ring and coming close to putting away Star at various points, so it wasn't a complete squash unlike the previous contest. Mil Muertes and The Disciples of Death Attacked Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma and Konnan Very rarely in Lucha Underground have we had drawn out talking segments in the ring between two wrestlers, so I wasn't sure what to expect from this face off when it was initially announced. However, I really liked how it quickly turned into a brawl with Muertes destroying his Ultima Lucha opponent as well as Konnan. My only complaint is that Konnan made The Disciples of Death look a little weak by taking them all out on his own, and it wouldn't be as bad if they weren't contending for the Trios Championships at Ultima Lucha. Other than that, this was a great way of putting last minute heat on the heels and solidifying Muertes as a legitimate threat to the title. Overall Show As I've expressed before, I'm a fan of less being more, but I understood they needed to most of the Aztec medallion matches out of the way tonight because they had four left and the season finale is only a few weeks away. None of the matches stood out as being must-see, but the two segments featuring Pentagon Jr, Vampiro, Prince Puma and Mil Muertes were very well done and only made me even more excited for Ultima Lucha. Three weeks remain!
