Lucha Underground Review - October 5, 2016

Ivelisse def. Mariposa

Aside from Mariposa's feud with Sexy Star last season, it isn't often we seen women's matches in Lucha Underground, but this was pretty decent. Mariposa has emerged as a more compelling character since Season 2 and Ivelisse has always been excellent. I liked Ivelisse winning only for Martiposa and Marty "The Moth" Martiznez to attack her afterward, signaling that their feud is far from over. I originally questioned who would join forces with Ivelisse and if she'd reunite with Son of Havoc or Angelico, but we received our answer later in the show when Sami Callihan (the former Solomon Crowe) debuted in a backstage segment with her. They should be the perfect pairing.

Cage def. Texano in Match 2 of the Best of 5 Series

While I still couldn't care less about a Best of 5 Series featuring Texano, I will admit that this match was an immense improvement over their initial encounter, though I'm not sure if the "This is awesome!" chants from the crowd were entirely necessary. Nevertheless, it was a well-wrestled match, and as much as I would love for it to be a clean sweep for Cage, I assume Texano bounces back in the next two matches.

Lucha Underground Champion Matanza Cueto def. Prince Puma

Cueto hasn't had many truly great matches since coming to Lucha Underground, but this match was actually excellent, which shouldn't come as any surprise given Puma's involvement. This is definitely one of the bigger matches Lucha Underground can do at the moment, and while Puma's bigger focus is on Mil Muertes right now, I would have had him challenge for the title after overcoming Muertes. Nevertheless, his interference was logical and Dario Cueto preventing the referee to call for the disqualification was a nice touch.

Overall Show

In addition to several stories moving forward, this was a wrestling-heavy show with a solid opener, a better-than-expected Cage vs. Texano match, and a highly entertaining main event. Plus, Sami Callihan debuted, so it was an enjoyable hour on the whole. Lucha Underground is still lacking that overall focus it has had in the past, but I'm invested in most of the feuds going on at the moment all the same.
