Lucha Underground: Ultima Lucha Review - August 5, 2015

Johnny Mundo def. Alberto El Patron

I remember being slightly underwhelmed by their initial encounter all those months ago because it felt like they were holding back a bit (and there was also that odd babyface vs. babyface dynamic), but this was the great match they were capable of having and what I was hoping we would get from them. It started out slow, but they picked up the pace down the stretch and went all out by the end. Melina making her Lucha Underground debut and helping Mundo pick up the win was perfect as it protected El Patron in defeat, kept the feud alive and brings her into the fold if there is in fact a Season 2. I didn't see that coming whatsoever so it made for an awesome surprise.


Pentagon Jr. def. Vampiro in a Cero Miedeo Match

Wow! I was setting myself up to be disappointed because the build has been so great that I thought they wouldn't be able to top it with their match, and Vampiro getting "injured" early on made me afraid the match was getting cut short. Thankfully, that ultimately wasn't the case and they delivered a highly entertaining hardcore brawl following the commercial break. Vampiro was relatively limited, sure, but you had to expect that given he hasn't wrestled in over a decade. I'm typically not a fan of extreme wrestling such as this, but this bout was especially enjoyable for the story it told. And then the biggest shocker of them all, we finally found out who Pentagon Jr.'s master has been after all this time: Vampiro! I actually really like the idea of putting them together because they fit together like a glove and now all the reports of officials wanting to replace Vampiro on commentary make sense.

Fenix def. Aerostar, Sexy Star, King Cuerno, Big Ryck, Jack Evans and Bengala to Win the Gift of the Gods Championship

This was fairly similar to WWE's Money in the Bank matches that there was never too much going on at one time, but everyone was given the chance to shine at some point and was able to hit their signature spots. There tended to be only one or two people in the ring at a time with the rest hanging around ringside, but the action was entertaining enough that I didn't mind it. They also managed to incorporate a few new feuds with interference from Marty the Moth (attacking Sexy Star) and Delavar Daivari (attacking Big Ryck). Fenix was my pick to win and I'm happy to see him emerge victorious as a title match between him and longtime rival Mil Muertes down the line would be money.


Blue Demon Jr. def. El Texano in a No Disqualification Match

Of all the matches on this show, this was the one I was least looking forward to and it was every bit as lame as I thought it would be. The match really wasn't much of a match; Demon dominated almost all of it before Chavo Guerrero got involved and executed the "swerve of the century" (and yes, I do mean that sarcastically). I understand it's a callback to the second episode ever of Lucha Underground and I appreciate that to an extent, but when will they learn that nobody cares about Demon and Chavo as allies or as rivals? Any momentum Texano built for himself coming into this seemingly went to waste, sadly.


Mil Muertes def. Prince Puma to Win the Lucha Underground Championship

This match definitely had a big fight feel to it and a lot of that has to do with how Puma and Muertes have been booked up to this point. Puma has defended his title against all comers in the last seven months whereas Muertes has been unstoppable with very few singles losses to his record. They put together a strong main event title match with several suspenseful near-falls mixed in. Since no one had ever kicked out of their respective finishers before, it packed a punch when they did so during this match. Muertes winning clean was a nice touch and it makes for a sweet story when/if Lucha Underground returns with Muertes and the Disciples of Death holding all the gold.


Overall Show

What an amazing way of closing out such a stellar season of Lucha Underground. When I started watching the show back when it debuted in October, I never planned on sticking with it beforehand let alone writing reviews of it, but after seeing the premiere episode, I was hooked and have since every edition since. They do a tremendous job of starting storylines, following through with them and blowing them off in fantastic fashion. This season finale was full of twists and turns as well as incredible in-ring action that sets the stage for a potential Season 2, which I have my fingers crossed for. This promotion is far too good not to be picked up, so here's hoping it's in the cards later this year.
