La Rosa Negra (Team Pretty) def. Taya Valkyrie (Team Rock N' Roll) by Disqualification in a Champions Series First Round MatchNegra is skilled from what I've seen from her and Valkyrie is obviously very talented in her own right, so I was looking forward to seeing what they could do against each other. Unfortunately, this didn't last long before Valkyrie apparently injured Negra and caused the contest to be cut short. A graphic was shown before the injury occurred explaining what happened, including that Valkyrie refused to let up on Negra and was disqualified in the process. Apparently, she'll be "suspended" until 2023. So, two weeks? Mercurio (Team Gold) def. Joe Alonzo (Team Rebelion) in a Champions Series First Round MatchI have yet to see anything resembling an above-average match from Mercurio (he's clearly more of a character than a wrestler), but at least he's not egregiously awful. Alonzo is competent as well, so this ended up being okay. This was another instance where I had zero incentive to see either guy win, but Mercurio is more established at this point, so him winning made more sense. Jennacide (Team Rock N' Roll) def. NWA World Women's Tag Team Champion Ella Envy (Team Pretty) in a Champions Series First Round MatchJennacide is far from my favorite wrestler in the NWA, and Envy isn't the greatest, either, but to their credit, they had one of the better matches in the Champions Series so far. Not because of anything they did in the ring but rather because of the story they told with Envy attempting to avoid Jennacide the entire time only to eat defeat. It was simple stuff, but it made the match more interesting than everything else in the Champions Series up to this point. Max The Impaler and Ashley D'Amboise (Team Rebelion) def. Natalia Markova and Roxy (Team Gold) in a Champions Series First Round MatchMax and Markova just faced off in a Casket match at Hard Times 3 last month, so I liked how they started off the match with each other. Max and D'Amboise were quite the pairing, while Markova and Roxy were a fine duo as well. I don't know much about Roxy, but I thought she did well. All in all, it was a decent main event with Max picking up the win for her team as she should have and establishing her dominance in the process. Overall ShowThree of the four matches this week were women's matches, so that was a nice change of pace. As has been the case so far with the Champions Series, none of the matches have stood out in a major way, but they've all been pretty passable. I still find it difficult to follow and care about any of this, but I appreciate the effort. I will say that the pre-taped promos between the matches where we hear from the members and captains of each team has been well done as they give the concept more meaning.
