RJ’s Two Cents - Which WrestleMania Is the Worst: WrestleMania 25, 27 or 29?

Since watching my first WrestleMania there have been mostly good shows. When I look over the 14 years there are three shows that stick out that were not good then and watching them again they weren’t good. My first WrestleMania was 18 but 25, 27 and 29 are the three shows that fell flat. I will analyze each show and judge which WrestleMania was the worst.

WrestleMania 25

The 25th annual show was a dud and failed to live up to the hype. I enjoyed the MITB ladder match but hated how CM Punk won two years in a row. Why not give the briefcase to Shelton Benjamin, Kofi Kingston or Christian? Up next we had the awful 10-minute Kid Rock concert. The concert was brutal and lead into the awful Miss WrestleMania Battle Royal. Santino Marella dressing in drag was dumb and how they didn’t announce any of the old Divas was as stupid. They actually had him win which was mind-boggling stupid and did nothing for the Divas division.

Chris Jericho defeated Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka and Ricky Steamboat in a pretty boring handicap match. Besides the one on one action between Jericho and Steamboat the match was very forgettable. Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy was a good match and helped bring more excitement to the crowd. Rey Mysterio vs. JBL was a 21 second match that was pointless but it was nice to see Rey win the IC championship.

The two title matches were really boring especially Orton vs. HHH. The build for that match was so intense with HHH breaking into Randy’s house and Randy kissing Stephanie. The match should have been No DQ or Street Fight but the standard singles match wasn’t the main event we should’ve gotten. I wasn’t a fan of Cena vs. Edge vs. Big Show in 2009 and it wasn’t any better now. The match was hard to get into after the amazing Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels but that is the WWE’s fault for the awful card order.

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker was great even though I like Shawn vs. Taker II better. This match was the standout of this card and made the rest of the show look bad. This contest should’ve main evented this show but the WWE fixed that mistake at WrestleMania 26.

Another issue with this show is that at Backlash the next month featured rematches from this show and I favored those bouts over these ones. The WWE flopped on their 25th show but were able to get WrestleMania 26 correct.

WrestleMania 27

Two years after 25 the WWE dubbed WrestleMania 27 “The Biggest WrestleMania Ever.” The Rock came back to be the special guest host but the show was bad. Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio was a decent match but why did they put it as the opener? After this match we had two snooze matches with Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio and The Apple vs. The Corre. I have no idea why the WWE made this eight man tag team match but for 1:35 of action it was a waste of time.

Luckily, we had a good match after the eight-man tag with CM Punk vs. Randy Orton. I still can’t believe to this day that they made the next match between Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole. This wasn’t really a match and it lasted over 13 minutes. This may be two of the worst competitors to go one on one at WrestleMania.

I didn’t mind HHH vs. Undertaker but as a 30-minute match it was too long for my liking. They played out the story that Undertaker took a long beating but I enjoyed their matches at 17 and 28 more. The six person mixed tag team match with Snooki, Trish and John Morrison vs. LayCool and Dolph Ziggler was as good as a celebrity match could be.

The main event had a great video package but besides that it wasn’t good. The Rock interfering was dumb especially since they used this match to setup the main event for WrestleMania 28. WrestleMania 27 had some good matches but featured some bad matches as well. Can the good outweigh the bad?

WrestleMania 29

Going into WrestleMania 29 it seemed like it may be a glorified Monday Night Raw and that is exactly what this show was. The opening six-man with The Shield vs. Big Show, Randy Orton and Sheamus was good but the finish was bad. Big Show not helping his team then turning heel for the 100th time did nothing for the crowd or me.

Mark Henry vs. Ryback was decent, Team Hell No vs. Ziggler/Big E was good but screamed a Raw match. Jericho vs. Fandango was okay but come on. Jericho loses to put over Fandango. There was no way he was getting over and I feel like it was a waste to bring back Y2J to lose to Fandango. I had interest in Del Rio vs. Swagger but once Swagger got a DUI I knew he wouldn’t win. Swagger's entrance wasn’t even shown. If Ziggler cashed in, the show would be more memorable but the next night cash-in was amazing.

The saving grace to this show was up next with a great story and a great match. It may have come off as disrespectful but CM Punk and Paul Heyman had the fans intrigued with them capitalizing off of Paul Bearer's actual death. The match was the best on this show and one of my favorites over the past 5 WrestleManias.

HHH vs. Lesnar was decent but recently Shawn Michaels has accompanied The Game to the ring. At WrestleMania 28, 29 and 31, the Heartbreak Kid helped HHH in the contest. This matchup saw interference by Shawn Michaels and helped beat Brock Lesnar. This was also the second time they faced in six months so it wasn’t as special as it could’ve been.

The Verdict

When it comes down to it I had to pick between two shows. I eliminated WrestleMania 25 because even though the matches weren’t all amazing they were decent and it just didn’t live up to the hype. It is down to WrestleMania 27 and 29. Wow, this is tough. WrestleMania 27 had some good matches but also had a few stinkers. WrestleMania 29 was so average that only one match stood out. I would have to say that the worst WrestleMania since I have been a fan was WrestleMania 27.

Even though WrestleMania 29 was average it outweighed the bad matches at 27. At least for WrestleMania 29 I would watch the show for Punk vs. Taker/ Rock vs. Cena II. I haven’t had any urges to watch 27 at all. There you have it, people, WrestleMania 27 is the worst WrestleMania since I have been a fan.

Believe That!
