RJ’s Two Cents - Why Chris Jericho’s Current WWE Run Has Been His Best

When I became a fan of the WWE, Chris Jericho was the Undisputed WWE Champion but he didn’t seem like he was a big deal to a new casual fan. The Rock, Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold stood out as the stars of the company to me. Jericho would have a few good years but by the mid to late 2000s he was just in the mid card doing mediocre work besides his World Heavyweight Championship run in 2010. I have been a fan of Jericho’s since 2004 but I can admit he hadn’t done much after that point.

Jericho returned in 2012 as an over the top babyface but he didn’t say anything. Eventually he turned heel and went on to feud with CM Punk. I enjoyed their feud but Jericho didn’t make me want to hate him. He did trash CM Punks family and their skeletons but it wasn’t like he was lying about it in storyline. After losing to Punk, Jericho didn’t do much and left after SummerSlam.

He returned in 2013 to lose to Fandango at WrestleMania 29, which did nothing for him, or Fandango. It was an absolute waste of Jericho and that was definitely his worst stint with the company. He would resurface in 2014 by facing Bray Wyatt but the feud didn’t do much for me. Jericho has always worked better as a heel so being a face against Bray Wyatt was okay.

In 2016, Jericho returned to Raw to announce he was in the 2016 Royal Rumble. Jericho would have a great performance and was eliminated by Dean Ambrose. Jericho faced AJ Styles in his WWE debut match and lost on Raw. They teased a pairing between them but Jericho would turn on Styles. This is when the best Jericho developed. Jericho started insulting the fans, wearing the scarf and vest and being a great heel.

The whole AJ Styles chants were dumb but it was perfect reason for Jericho to turn his back on his former Y2AJ partner. Jericho shocked majority of the WWE Universe by defeating Styles at WrestleMania 32. Jericho has now focused on Dean Ambrose and I love his heel character. As a fan of Jericho you want to boo him because of his actions. He insults the fans, calls everyone a stupid idiot and plays the part of an arrogant heel to a tee. Jericho will probably leave soon but I hope the WWE gives him a new contract because his new heel character is definitely his best stint so far.

If Jericho ever comes back to the company I hope he fires up this old character because he is so easy to hate. Jericho referring to himself, as “The GOAT” is also another great heel tactic. The interaction between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens last week after they beat Sami Zayn and Dean Ambrose was hilarious. Maybe Owens and Jericho can form a tag team and add new blood to the tag team division in the future.
