 By RJ Marceau In my mind, Lucha Underground is the second best wrestling organization behind the WWE. Lucha brings a new format and style of wrestling that blows TNA/Impact Wrestling out of the water. The only issue with Lucha Underground is the star power to attract fans. Last season, besides Johnny Mundo (John Morrison) Alberto El Patron (Del Rio) and Big Ryck (Ezekiel Jackson) the roster was developed of mostly unknown wrestlers. For me it was hard to get into the product since I didn’t really know anybody and couldn’t connect at first. Eventually guys like Prince Puma and Pentagon Jr. started to click for me and I became more interested in the product. This summer reports came out that Rey Mysterio would be signing with Lucha Underground. Mysterio as many know is my favorite wrestler of all time so his addition to Lucha Underground would definitely pique my interest. The first two episodes of Lucha Underground season 2 were good and we saw PJ Black (Justin Gabriel) make his Lucha debut. I was getting annoyed how they hadn’t involved Mysterio at all.  Then after the show presumably went off the air you could hear someone talking and it panned to a room with a man in a hood. Once I heard the voice I knew it was Rey Mysterio. Rey was talking to his “son” and how Mysterio is his master. He is talking to Dragon Azteca Jr. who is from Tijuana, Mexico like his master Mysterio. Dragon Azteca Jr. is known on the independent scene as El Hijo de Rey Mysterio, which translates to “The son of Rey Mysterio.” Rey goes on to talk about the importance of the mask and how Azteca Jr. should show his face just like Mysterio does. The camera then pans to a man coming into the frame with Mysterio showing his mask.
The smile on my face went ear to ear seeing Rey “debut” in Lucha Underground. Rey’s involvement will be big for Lucha Underground and for two reasons. Star power to a rather unknown product and will help make new Lucha Underground stars. I would be a fool to think that Rey Mysterio would come to Lucha Underground to win the Lucha Underground Championship and not put other people over. When wrestlers get old that is their job, no pun intended. They make new wrestlers look good so they can get a fan base and seem credible. Mysterio can have great matches with Mundo, Puma and Pentagon Jr as well as putting over younger talent. Mysterio is no Hulk Hogan in drawing power but I think it’s safe to say he is the best luchador wrestler of all time. Lucha Underground is known for that fast passed, luchador style so getting Mysterio is Hogan esque for Lucha Underground. The goal for Rey Mysterio seems to be as the mentor of Dragon Azteca Jr. Mysterio will give his approval of Azteca Jr. and help him get over with the fans. I don’t know if Lucha Underground will have Azteca Jr. turn on Mysterio but having Mysterio endorse Azteca Jr. as a new rising star will help Lucha Underground and Dragon Azteca Jr. For me as a fan any involvement with Mysterio in Lucha will have my interest so I hope the future of Rey Mysterio in Lucha Underground will be good.
