Back in 2015, Rusev & Lana were the top up and comers from NXT with Rusev dominating as United States Champion. He demolished the entire midcard and seemed to be unstoppable. Unfortunately for him he ran into John Cena at WrestleMania 31. Rusev lost to John Cena at WrestleMania, Extreme Rules and Payback. The WWE then thought splitting up the duo was a smart idea and that developed into the worst storyline of the whole year.
When Rusev was involved in the League of Nations it started to get him more notoriety but when they continued to lose to Roman Reigns in 4 on 1 handicap matches the whole group was turned into a joke. When the League of Nations split up I was hoping they would reunite the duo of Rusev and Lana and they did that thankfully. Rusev gained his momentum back by winning back the United States Championship at Extreme Rules from Kalisto. Since winning the title he has defended against Cesaro, Titus O’Neil, Kalisto and Zack Ryder.
Eventually I figured he would face an upper midcard talent after defeating guys like Kalisto, Ryder and O’Neil but feeding him to Roman Reigns makes no sense. When a dominant champion like a Rusev is scheduled to lose the championship he should be set up for a better opportunity. But if Rusev loses the title at SummerSlam I don’t see him in the WWE Universal Championship picture. Rusev losing to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam would be identical to him losing to John Cena at WrestleMania 31.
I have loved how Rusev has reinvented the character and is actually portraying himself more than he ever has. Bringing up his real life marriage to Lana and how she is all his gets me every time. If Rusev loses and then goes to contend for the WWE Universal Title I am cool with that and won’t be mad. But if he is regulated to what happened before then they are wasting a perfect heel.
