The Downfall of WWE’s Current Tag Team Division

Late last year, we saw a sudden sprout in WWE’s tag team division. We saw new teams forming and older teams receiving more time on weekly programming. The genesis of Team Hell No definitely sparked a flame, and heated up the tag team division back in late-August to September. Eventually, we’d get more tag teams featured on Raw and SmackDown, such as the Prime Time Players, Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara, Cody Rhodes & Damien Sandow, and even Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd.

Several months have passed and the tag team division isn’t shaping up to be what it once was before. Many elements contribute to this rapid downfall of the highly anticipated rejuvenation of tag teams. Weekly, we see different combinations of single matches with tag team members that don’t do much to build an upcoming PPV match. Also, some superstars have shown that they aren’t fully committed to being a cohesive team. With Rhode Scholars’ recent split, and Mysterio / Cara’s issues and injuries, one has to wonder if Team Hell No really has any competition left. We’ve seen them battle the Prime Time Players plenty of times, with Team Hell No coming out on top.

What’s left of the tag team division? Team Hell No won’t be together forever and some may say their characters, as a team, are beginning to grow a bit stale. We haven’t seen Primo & Epico compete in a tag match with formidable opponents, other than Khali and Hornswoggle, in a while and you can consider Kidd and Gabriel split up due to Kidd’s injury. The Usos were showing signs that they were receiving a push, but it didn’t last very long. However, there may be a solution to this issue. The WWE could have The Shield win the tag team titles to show their dominance, or even 3MB to show people they mean business and are a legitimate faction. There is also the idea of placing the tag team titles on Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston, which would make sense since they are practically a faction along with AJ.

Wherever WWE chooses to direct their tag team division, one thing is for sure. There is plenty of space for improvement and better booking decisions. It’d a smart choice to focus on that division and find ways to make it distinct from other companies’.
