![]() By RJ Marceau If you have been watching NXT since the rebranding of the company, we have seen independent wrestlers such as Solomon Crowe, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens and Apollo Crews. These guys had big signings, various vignettes and huge buzz after signing with NXT. One guy, who still to my knowledge hasn’t signed with NXT that has caught my eye, is Johnny “Wrestling” Gargano. On September 2nd, the Dusty Rhodes Classic started with 16 teams with random pairs and permanent tag teams that we see weekly on NXT. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa defeated Bull Dempsey and Tyler Breeze. This was a huge upset for the Indy stars. Gargano was easily over with the Full Sail crowd with his charisma and them chanting “Johnny Wrestling.” Gargano is very entertaining in the ring and I don’t think his size (5 ft. 10 and 190-200lbs) will really hold him back on NXT. The best part of his wrestling style is that he isn’t a spot monkey like other guys his size and doesn’t use flips to get over. Baron Corbin and Rhyno defeated them in the 2nd round of the Dusty Rhodes Classic but they had a good showing. I thought this would be the last we would see of Gargano but luckily we saw his singles debut on last night’s episode of NXT. He wrestled Apollo Crews and had a great showing in defeat. It wasn’t a total squash but Gargano had some unique offensive moves against Crews. With Crews match with Tyler Breeze at NXT Takeover: RESPECT, I doubted Gargano would win.
Gargano is miles better with the crowd and better in the ring then Ciampa so if the WWE had to sign one of them Gargano would have to be the choice. He has the ability to be a tag team star but I can see him flourish as a singles star. WWE Champion material is unlikely but midcarder on main roster would be more accurate of his potential in the WWE. But as of right now they should focus on signing Gargano before he signs with another Indy company or GFW.
