WWE Main Event Review - January 2, 2018

Dana Brooke def. Mickie James

Yes, both women are babyfaces, so the crowd didn't have much of an incentive to cheer one person over the other. It wasn't a great match by any means, but it was at least better than I thought it would be, largely thanks to James carrying Brooke to a competent contest. Brooke winning out of nowhere was certainly a surprise, but I guess WWE wants to feature her more now that she's a part of Titus Worldwide. Poor James.

Akira Tozawa def. Tony Nese

I thought WWE was going to start pushing Nese after he beat Tozawa on last week's edition of 205 Live, but apparently not. Oh well. At any rate, this was another enjoyable encounter from them that the crowd was actually into, especially down the stretch. That said, the only thing really worth noting about this match is that there was a line from Vic Joseph that was edited in where he said that Cedric Alexander will receive his scheduled WWE Cruiserweight Championship match when Enzo Amore is cleared to compete, though everyone already assumed that.

Overall Show

For the second straight week, the crowd was livelier than usual for the Main Event taping, which I appreciated. Brooke vs. James was a bit better than expected yet still not worth going out of your way to see, whereas Tozawa vs. Nese was a fun little matchup but nothing you haven't seen before from them. It's sad crowds are hotter for Main Event than they are for 205 Live, but that's mostly because 205 Live is taped after SmackDown Live. Nevertheless, this was a decent show on the whole.
