WWE Main Event Review - June 24, 2021

NXT North American Champion Bronson Reed def. Drew Gulak (Non-Title)

A competitive match, this was not. It was funny seeing Gulak go from dominating Ricochet last week (not to mention that Ricochet went on to qualify for the men's Money in the Bank Ladder match on Raw) to being squashed by Reed this week. However, I wouldn't have wanted anything different. This was all about showcasing Reed and he came off like a beast. He's been doing great work recently in NXT, and although I'm sure he's main roster bound at some point, I hope he stays in NXT for the foreseeable future.

NXT Champion Karrion Kross def. Shelton Benjamin (Non-Title)

Kross' entrance was underwhelming compared to what it normally is in NXT. They didn't even bother to give him Scarlett. He just walked out with the belt to his music and that was it. Hopefully that doesn't mean WWE intends to tone it down on the main roster because that's a big part of his presentation. The match itself was solid and hard-hitting at times. They didn't seem to mesh as well as I was hoping, but it was an enjoyable affair on the whole. Kross killing someone like Reed did would have been a better use of him here.

Overall Show

Well, this show was certainly an unexpected treat. It wasn't the first time stars from NXT have been in action on Main Event as I remember Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, The Ascension, The Lucha Dragons and Aleister Black all making appearances before being called up eventually. Hell, even Mansoor had a recent run of matches on Main Event before being moved to the Monday Night Raw roster permanently. That said, I hope this was intended to be more of a tryout for Kross and Reed and not a sign that they'll be on Raw or SmackDown any time soon. They're both currently champions and don't need to move up as urgently as people such as Finn Balor, Adam Cole and others. This was a fun edition of Main Event and a nice break from the norm.
