WWE Main Event Review - September 29, 2022

Mustafa Ali def. Akira Tozawa

I loved that we got to hear from Ali beforehand via a picture-in-picture promo and loved even more that Benjamin was shown watching this match from the back. Was Ali vs. Tozawa an important match? No, but it did progress the story Ali and Benjamin have going. Ali and Tozawa are both very talented, so unsurprisingly, this was a well-wrestled, quality contest. I'm curious if Ali still wants out of WWE or if he's content with where he's at right now.

R-Truth def. Shelton Benjamin

I usually skip through everything on the show, but I'm glad I caught the backstage interaction these two had after one of the commercial breaks. It wasn't anything super special, but it was cool to see them add an extra layer to their match considering we never see this sort of stuff on Main Event. We've seen these two face off several times before (as far back as 2008), so although this was nothing new, I did like how Ali's distraction from ringside was what cost Benjamin the victory. Benjamin has been a babyface lately, but he definitely played the heel role and will likely continue to do so in this storyline with Ali.

Overall Show

I need to note that WWE's deal with Hulu is on the verge of expiring, and as of this writing, all of the content is scheduled to be removed from the platform on Friday. I don't know where the show will be available to watch for those in the United States, and although I'm not exactly heartbroken, the timing couldn't be worse because Main Event has actually improved in recent weeks with more storyline-driven stuff. I've been digging what we've been getting from Ali and Benjamin and expect Cedric Alexander to play an interesting role in it once he resurfaces. In short, let's hope WWE and Hulu can work out a deal to keep their content on the service.
